A Brief History of The Nutcracker
In 1816, E.T.A. Hoffmann penned down one of his most famous stories, 'The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.' Three decades later, Alexandre Dumas revised the story. His version of the tale successfully captured the attention of the world which led to it being converted into a libretto. This libretto was later choreographed by Marius Patipa and Lev Ivanov. The duo then asked the Russian composer, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky to produce the score of the ballet.
In 1892, The Nutcracker premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg. Although the show's first performance received a lukewarm response from the critics but Tchaikovsky's score stood out. Since then, many ballet companies have gone on to stage their own versions of this amazing ballet including Dayton Ballet.
