The Ballet Company of Teatro Alla Scala was officially recognized in 1778 at the inauguration of what would become one of the most famous musical theatres in the world, La Scala theatre in Milan, Italy.
Over two centuries that the company has been in existence, it has featured incredible dancers and illustrious choreographers. Among them have included the likes of Salvatore Viganò, Jean-Georges Noverre, and Gasparo Angiolini, all of whom who have had a profound impact on dance in Europe.
Ballet officially became a part of the company with the arrival of Carlo Blasis, the famous dancer, teacher, and dance theorist. His contributions to the company and to the theatre were numerous, not least of which the fact that he crafted the company’s ballet style.

Giselle is a romantic ballet which has two parts. The ballet first premiered in Paris in 1841 and has since been performed around the world by some of the best ballet companies.

When Giselle is performed on the West Coast this summer, the stunning score composed by Adolphe Adam will be performed by the Mikhailovsky Orchestra.
The story is about Giselle, a peasant girl who is both loving and naïve. She falls in love with Albrecht, an aristocrat, who becomes her lover even though he is betrothed to another. Giselle doesn’t know that he is already betrothed and when she finds out about his deception, she dies of grief.
When she dies she is enlisted by a ghostly army of maidens who were unmarried. Called the Wilis, this army of ghosts haunts the forests and will dance to death any male mortal who comes across their path.
One night, Albrecht wanders into the forest and into their grasp. Giselle, in a heartbreaking final act of her love for him, sets him free.
Bolle, who plays the role of Albrecht, has been a resident guest artist with the La Scala Theatre since 1998. He is known for dancing for characters who exhibit desperation, love, and passion. Some of his previous roles include Romeo in “Romeo and Juliet” and Armand Duval in “Lady of the Camellias.
