Pippin the musical was originally produced and choreographed for Broadway by Bob Fosse in 1972. The music and lyrics are by Oscar Award winner Stephen Schwartz, whereas the book is by the author Roger O. Hirson. The first show of Pippin by Broadway Productions premiered at the Imperial Theatre and before closing in 1977 it ran for a total of 1,944 performances. Pippin has also been staged by other production companies in different years. These include the West End production of Pippin which hit the theatres in 1973 and Cambridge/A.R.T in 2012 among many others.
Pippin is an energetic show in which the story of the prince on his quest for significance is told by the leading player of the troupe. In the original Broadway production this leading role was played by Ben Vereen who won a Tony Award for this very portrayal of his in the musical. Pippin is an inspiring tale where you get to know about the importance of happiness and how small amounts of it are necessary even when people have money and fame. The latest production of Pippin by American Repertory Theater in Cambridge was most notable for its circus acts created by Gypsy Snider. It was directed by Diane Paulus who has won Tony Award for ‘Best Music Revival for Hair’ and the Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. With its breathtaking acrobatics feats by Les 7 Doigts de la Main, it was a captivating production that featured the sizzling choreography Chet Walker in the style of original director, Bob Fosse.
Pippin has been praised by Scott Miller, a famous scholar in the theatre world, in his book ‘From Assassins to West Side Story’. According to him this musical, though under-appreciated or not fully comprehended has much more depth to it than what people generally realize. Since the musical was produced by many other productions on lines very different from the original Broadway production, it lost its standing. However, Scott assured that if done exactly the way Bob Fosse had envisioned, this show which has now got a reputation of being cute is actually a very surreal and provoking one. To revive the original Pippin in theatres, Broadway took up the responsibility and early this year it was decided to transfer the production of Pippin by American Repertory Theater to Broadway. The cast will remain the same as it was at A.R.T i.e. Matthew James as the little prince, Andrea Martinas Berthe, Patina Miller as Leading Player, Charlotte d'Amboise as Fastrada and Terrence Mann as King Charles. The show has been scheduled to be premiered in the theatres this spring.
The original Broadway production of Pippin has won four Tony Awards and five Drama Desk Awards. Most of these awards have been given in the category of best direction and best choreography which was done by none other than Bob Fosse. With favorites like "Magic to do" and "Glory" and "Corner of the Sky," it is the 31st longest-running musical of Broadway which you can watch live with Pippin tickets as it makes it return to the Broadway this season.
