The Creative Force Behind My Fair Lady

My Fair Lady is the creative genius of American Theater Hall of Famer Frederick Loewe who provided the score and the three-time Academy Award winner Alan Jay Lerner who wrote the lyrics and book of this musical. It is based on a 1913 George Bernard Shaw play called, Pygmalion.

Broadway Production

After its successful run at the Erlanger Theatre in Philadelphia, My Fair Lady premiered on Broadway in March, 1956 and was staged at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York City. It was then transferred to the Broadhurst Theatre before moving to The Broadway Theatre where it ran till September 29, 1962 and completed 2717 performances. Directed and choreographed by Moss Hart and Hanya Holm respectively, this show featured Julie Andrews as Eliza Doolittle, Rex Harrison as Henry Higgins and Stanley Holloway as Alfred P. Doolittle.

This production of the show won six Tony Awards including one for, 'Best Musical.' It has since gone on to tour the United States and the United Kingdom multiple times and has also been revived on Broadway four times.
