All About the Jersey Boys

Based on the life and times of the 1960s rock n’ roll band The Four Seasons, Jersey Boys made its debut in 2005 as a jukebox musical. It has been presented in a sort of docudrama style to narrate the story of the establishment, success, and eventual parting of the ways of The Four Seasons.

The play has been structured around the four “seasons,” each of which is narrated by one of the four members of the band together with their own perspective on the connected history and music. Bob Gaudio is the man behind the show’s music with lyrics from Bob Crewe.

Popular songs include “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” “Rag Doll,” “Stay,” “My Eyes Adored You,” “Sherry” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry” among others. The idea for the musical was conceived by none other than Bob Gaudio, one of the original members of the The Four Seasons.

He planned to create a musical out of the former band’s discography. For this purpose, Gaudio enlisted the help of writers Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice along with director Des McAnuff. At Brickman’s suggestion, a show was created about the history of the band rather than just remixing songs for an independent story.
