Fun Home definitely breaks new ground. The first Broadway musical with a lesbian lead character, it’s based on the 2006 graphic memoir by Alison Bechdel. Broadway’s first show with a lesbian protagonist has started its national tour. Fun Home weaves tragedy and humor into a complete stage production that’s definitely one of its kind. Sam Gold as the director has aesthetically blended nuanced storytelling and textured characters into an enchanting drama.

Fun Home is a fascinating story of an eccentric and troubled family. Lisa Kron’s musical triples the role of Alison Bechdel, presenting her in three stages of her life – when she’s a child, the time when she goes to college and an adult Alison.

The scene opens with an adult Alison, in the process of sketching cartoons as she tries to recreate the scenes from her past. Even years after her father’s death she still wonders why he committed suicide. Couldn’t he accept his homosexuality, or he preferred to live a closeted life? Was it due to this haunting fear that he always aggressively pushed her to wear girly dresses at the time when she was enjoying her tomboy image? Fun Home answers all these questions and more, including Alison realizing her own sexuality.

Fun Home poignantly explores the feelings of shame, guilt, fear and hope. The musical delivers on human complexities and this is what makes it a huge hit.
