The dawn of Cirque Du Soleil
Cirque du Soleil is the creation of Gilles Ste-Croix and Guy Laliberté. The seeds for its formation were planted when Laliberté helped Ste-Croix and Daniel Gauthier with setting up a fair in Baie-Saint-Paul. At that time, the latter two were running a youth hostel that centered on performing artists called Le Balcon Vert. Ste-Croix then decided to turn the Balcon Vert into a performing troupe in the year 1979. To bring this idea to life, Gilles Ste-Croix walked all the way to Quebec City using stilts which convinced the government to fund the production. That is when the trio created Les Échassiers de Baie-Saint-Paul. A year later, Les Échassiers was seen trekking across Quebec.
Les Échassiers acclaim from both the critics and audiences but it failed to produce the expected financial results. Not ones to give up, the trio took Les Échassiers on tour again and this time, the show managed to breakeven which encouraged Ste-Croix and Laliberté to hold a fair, La Fête Foraine in Baie-Saint-Paul in the year 1982. The touring festival turned out to be a huge hit. Due to the astounding success of the fair, the Quebec government later gave Laliberté a one and a half million dollar grant to put together a production to celebrate Quebec’s 450th anniversary and the result was ‘Le Grand Tour du Cirque du Soleil.’
Cirque du Soleil was to be a one year project initially but the show quickly became very popular. This motivated Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix to continue working on the production and they later turned it into a proper circus. Today, Cirque du Soleil has transformed into a multi-million dollar company which currently employs more than five thousand employees from different parts of the world. Moreover, it has been honored with the National Arts Centre Award and also has its own star on Canada’s Walk of Fame.
As of now Cirque du Soleil is running nineteen shows which are presented every year in more than 271 cities. What makes these productions different is that each event has its own storyline, theme and features live music. Add international performers wowing audiences with their breathtaking feats and it becomes an experience unlike any other.
Some of the shows that Cirque du Soleil is producing at the moment are Mystère, La Nouba, Varekai, Zumanity and Michael Jackson One. The company is also behind the insanely popular spectacle, Corteo.
