Originally written in China, during 19th century, the story of ‘Cinderella’ has undergone many variations over the decades. The most popular version of the tale has served as an inspiration to many opera and ballet productions. This version is the one written by Charles Perrault and like The Sleeping Beauty, it featured as one of eight stories in the book, ‘Histoires ou Contes du temps pass’ (Stories and Tales of the Past). Initially, Tchaikovsky was supposed to write the music for the ballet. However, for unknown reasons, the composition could not materialize. Years later, composer Sergei Prokofiev took on the challenge to produce music for the ballet of Cinderella. After a working on it for five years, he came up with a unique score that was to feature as an integral part of the Cinderella ballet shows for many years to come. Among the first few prominent people to stage the full-fledged ballets using Sergei’s score were Fredrick Ashton and Ben Stevenson.
Cinderella Ballet’s premiere show was held at the Bolshoi Theatre. It was choreographed by Rostislaz Zakharoz, while the first female performer to dance the title role was Galina Ulanova. Over the years, a number of companies around the world have performed the ballet to critical acclaim.
It is now being put together by the renowned production, Ballet Hawai. The upcoming Cinderella ballet is divided into three acts, each one of which depicts a different setting. Cinderella charts a young maiden’s journey from rags to riches. Magic spells, glass slippers, period costumes and a pumpkin carriage transport the audience into the fantasy land of the princess, where she rules the stage by flaunting her exceptional dancing skills, before the audience. Septime Webre has done a commendable job with the choreography, as each scene flows seamlessly in classical fashion, from the beginning till the end.
The costumes for each character of the show are by designer Judanna Lynn, while the stage sets are designed by James Kronzer, a popular name in Broadway. From the simple house of Cinderella to the grand palace of the prince and from her old worn out clothes to her glamorous outfit at the ball, each aspect of design has been dealt with immense hard work, creativity and attention to detail. The lighting effects further enhance the intricacy of design and craft, thereby setting the perfect mood and ambience for the performance.
The ballet dancers from The Washington Ballet feature popular names like Maki Onuki in key roles. Onuki is a favorite amongst Ballet audiences and is remembered for her stellar performance in the recent Ballet Hawaii adaptation of ‘Alice in Wonderland’. She has a strong stage presence and her smart technique and control of balance makes her performance appear smooth and flawless. The striking palace ball and climactic sequences are the highlights of the ballet show.
The notorious characters of the step sisters are played by Luis R. Torres and Derek Daniels. The role of Fairy Godmother is enacted by Sona Kharatian while Jared Nelson plays the role of the Prince.
The production also allows young amateur dancers studying in the Summer Intensive Program of Ballet Hawaii, to share the stage with prominent ballet performers and display their talents before the audience. The show boasts a high production value, thus making Cinderella’s fantasy come alive on stage.
Audiences of all age groups are looking forward to this ballet, as it offers a chance to enjoy an entertaining evening with friends and family. So get your Cinderella Ballet tickets and come enjoy a remarkable show put together by one of the best in Ballet.
