The Start as a Match
The WWE Money in the Bank made its debut in the year 2005 as part of WWE’s biggest event, WrestleMania 21. Back then, the match was specific to only the Raw brand. Edge became the first ever WWE superstar to win the Money in the Bank ladder match. The Money in the Bank was an instant hit right from the word go. The immense popularity it enjoyed paved the way for it to be converted into an annual pay-per-view.
Contestants: Edge, Shelton Benjamin, Kane, Christian, Chris Jericho, and Chris Benoit.
The Money in the Bank Pay-Per-View Debuts
The first ever WWE Money in the Bank pay-per-view made its debut, after WrestleMania XXVI, on July 18, 2010 in Kansas City at the Sprint Center. WWE’s two brands Raw and SmackDown had their own separate MITB matches. The Raw match was won by The Miz, while Kane won the SmackDown bout. The main event was the WWE Championship match between the title holder Sheamus and John Cena. It was a Steel Cage Match, which the former won by escaping the cage.
The Money in the Bank Format
The format of the match revolves around a briefcase hanging from the ceiling of the arena. The winner has to climb a folding ladder and unhook the case to be crowned the winner. The briefcase contains a contract that allows the winner to contest for the World Championship or the WWE title anytime he wants within a year.

The MITB PPV in 2019 threw up one of the biggest shocks in the show’s history. Sami Zayn, one of the contestants, was pulled from the match and the bout went ahead without him.
