The WWE introduced the Hall of Fame ceremony in 1993 following the untimely demise of Andre the Giant. Only two months after his death, the first Hall of Fame ceremony was held during the 22nd March, 1993 episode of Monday Night Raw and Andre was the sole inductee.
The WWE decided to make the Hall of Fame an annual event and the subsequent two editions were held in conjunction with the WWE’s pay-per-view King of the Ring. The 1996 edition was held in conjunction with the Survivor Series pay-per-view and it was the first time that the ceremony took place in front of a live audience. However, following the fourth edition, the Hall of Fame went on hiatus for eight years.
The WWE reintroduced the Hall of Fame in 2004 and this time it coincided with WrestleMania XX. The ceremony, similar to its predecessors, was not broadcasted on television, but was later released as a DVD.
The following year, the WWE allowed Spike TV and USA Network to broadcast an edited version of the ceremony. USA Network still continues to do that today. Since 2005, the Hall of Fame has been included as part of the WrestleMania DVD set. In 2014, the ceremony was broadcasted live for the first time on the WWE Network.
As of 2015, the Hall of Fame has a total of 129 members. These include ninety-five solo wrestlers, nine groups, eight celebrities and one fan. Twenty five of these members were inducted to the Hall posthumously.
Notable winners of the award show include Andre the Giant (inaugural inductee), Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka, Jesse “The Body” Ventura, Sgt. Slaughter, Hulk Hogan (inducted by Sylvester Stallone), “Nature Boy” Ric Flair (only two time inductee), “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, Jerry “The King” Lawler, Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat, Stone Cold Steve Austin, “ The Heartbreak Kid” Shawn Michaels and The Rock. These are examples of superstars who revolutionized the sport and put their bodies on the line to entertain the public. It is only fitting that their achievements be recognized.
Apart from wrestlers, several celebrities have also been inducted into the Hall of Fame. The most famous include Mr. T, Mike Tyson, Donald Trump and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
