The idea for the Southern Heritage Classic was conceived by Fred Jones Jr and Bill Thomas. Bill was the head of the athletics division of Tennessee University and he came to Fred to promote the game his team was playing against Murray State. He chose Fred because of his skills as an event promoter. Fred gave it a lot of thought but eventually declined the chance since his schedule was full. Their relationship didn’t end there because Thomas returned shortly afterwards with an idea of staging and promoting a game of football between the two rivals Jackson State University and Tennessee State University. The idea appealed to Fred immediately but he wanted it to be nothing like other games. He wanted it to be bigger and better than any football game in the country. He knew right from the start that this was to be something special so he went straight to work.
Fred wanted to give the Southern Heritage Classic the type of feel the Super Bowl has. It wasn’t to be only one game for the fans to come and enjoy, he wanted a host of other activities to keep fans entertained all through the weekend prior to the big game itself. The game was to be played in Memphis and both sides were promised a substantial amount as a reward for their efforts. The inaugural event was held in 1990 that was watched by approximately forty thousand fans in the stadium thus turning it into a success right from the word go. Over the years it has seen some of the closest and the greatest games in football history. Extra times, controversies and last minute touch downs you name it and it has had it. The historical rivalry the two teams share makes the contest all the more intriguing.
Thousand of football fans have bought Southern Heritage Classic tickets every year to be a part of the game and the fun that goes with it all through the weekend. Activities and events like Golf Classic, fashion shows, battle of the bands, tailgate party, comedy shows, brunch and luncheon with the coaches not only add to the flavor but also keep the fans involved and entertained. The Southern Heritage Classic is now among the most watched football games of the year and rightly so. The exposure it receives from major broadcasters makes it a perfect stage for the players to show their talents and show the world they have got what it takes to make it big. In short, if you are a football fan then this is your game, one that you cannot afford to miss out on.
