San Francisco Giants: An Illustrious History

One of the most storied franchises in the history of the MLB, the San Francisco Giants are an epitome of prestige and success. Only a handful of MLB teams have won the World Series more times than the Giants. The 8-time champions are among the oldest and most successful professional baseball sides ever.

They also have the most wins of any team in the history of baseball in North America. The Giants came into being in 1883 as the New York Gothams. The name got changed to the New York Giants three years later while the team eventually relocated to San Francisco in 1958.

As a franchise, the Giants were the first ever major league team to call New York City their home. They played at the legendary Polo Grounds and won 5 of their 8 World Series crowns representing the Big Apple. 14 out of their 23 National League pennants also came while the Giants were based in NYC.

Their haul of 23 National League pennants and 20 World Series appearances is a record for the National League. The Giants also have the highest number of Hall of Famers in the history of professional baseball.

The Ballpark History

The Giants currently play their home games at the Oracle Park and have done so since 2000. Prior to that, the Candlestick Park served as their home for the best part of 40 years, going back all the way to 1960. The Seals Stadium was the Giants’ first home ballpark when they moved to San Francisco in 1958. They played there for the first year of life in the Bay Area.

Until the NBA’s Golden State Warriors’ relocation to the Chase Center, the Giants were the only professional sports outfit from the city and county of San Francisco. They had held this distinction since 2014 when the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers moved to Santa Clara.

The San Francisco Giants’ Rivalries

The Giants have a number of rivalries with other MLB sides. Chief among them are the ones with the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Both these rivalries date back to the time when the Giants were based in New York.

Another major rivalry is with the Oakland Athletics. This one also dates back to the time when the Giants plied their trade in New York while the A’s called Philadelphia their home. The two teams faced each other in the World Series in 1905, 1911, and 1913 which effectively gave birth to this particular rivalry. You can witness intense encounters between all these teams by getting San Francisco giants tickets.

art from their 8 World Series crowns, the Giants have also won the National League 23 times and the National League West Division on 8 occasions. They have entered the playoffs with the help of a Wild Card berth on 3 occasions as well.

Only the New York Yankees have competed in more MLB World Series than the Giants. They are joint-second alongside the Dodgers with 20 appearances on the sport’s biggest stage. Since moving to San Francisco in 1958, World Series success eluded the giants for over 50 years before the turn of the decade brought a change in fortunes.

Between 2010 and 2014, the Giants were crowned the best baseball team in the land three times. That last triumph in 2014 came after a topsy-turvy World Series against the Kansas City Royals. The current crop will be on a mission to maintain that good run and add some more silverware to their gleaming trophy cabinet. Get your SF Giants tickets at the earliest to enjoy some great action.

SAN-FRANCISCO GIANTS NEWS AND UPDATES

Are the Giants in the playoffs?

The San Francisco Giants have not made it to the playoffs as yet simply because the MLB season hasn’t even begun. The Giants are one of the most dominant teams in MLB history and their eight World Series titles, twenty three NL Pennants and eight West Division championships is a testament to that. They made it to the postseason last year but lost out to the Cubs in the NLDS. They will for sure be looking to go beyond that stage of the season this time around and they have the team to do that.
