Name Suns was selected through a naming contest and it was finalized from a long list of suggested names, the winner was awarded $1000 and season tickets. Since 1992 the Suns home arena is the US Airways Center located 201 East Jefferson in Phoenix, the center has purple seats and is also famously know as the Purple Palace.

The Suns have one of the best winning percentages i.e. 50%, they have advanced to the NBA finals twice in 1976 and 1993 but despite showing good performance for the past 40 years they have yet to win the NBA Championship. The Suns 1st season was not very good and they failed to make to the playoffs but in 1969-70 they raced to the Divisional semi-finals but lost to Los Angeles Lakers 4-3. After 1970 the Suns were unable to give any impactful performance for a few years.

John Macleod was hired as head coach in 1973 and few good players were also signed.1975-76 Suns game improved, they beat the Seattle SuperSonics in Conference semi-finals and Golden State Warriors in finals, they made a mark in history by storming to NBA finals for the 1st time but lost to Boston Celtics 4-2. From late 70’s to late 80’s the Suns faced ups and downs but their playing style established them as a fearsome team. In 1978-79 they lost the Conference finals to the Seattle SuperSonics and then for the next 2 years went on to play the semi-finals but lost in 1980 to the Lakers and Sacramento Kings in 1981.
Phoenix Suns got attention again in 1984 when they surpass all other teams to reach the Conference finals for the 3rd time but this time lost again to their old rivals the Lakers 4-2. Afterwards the Suns game was affected by some players suffering injuries and also a player’s drug scandal, Macleod left and Cotton Fitzsimmons joined and from 1988-91 Phoenix Suns lost 1 Conference semi-final and 2 finals.

1992 was a start of a successful era for the Phoenix Suns as they drafted star forward Charles Barkley and some other fine players like Danny Manning, Wayman Tisdale and Elliot Perry. The Suns proved true stunners in 1992-93 season, they finished 1st  with career best score of 60 wins and just 20 losses, won the Conference finals and played for the 2nd time in NBA finals but lost to Chicago Bulls 4-2. In 1993-94 season they finished 2nd scoring 56 wins against 26 losses but lost in semi-finals to Houston Rockets, in 1994-95 Suns stood 1st in the Conference, scored 59 wins and lost 23 but lost again to last year rivals the Rockets 4-3 in semi-finals.

From 1999-2003 the Suns couldn’t display their true flair but after addition of Kurt Thomas, Raja Bell and all point guard Steve Nash they were a formidable team again. In 2004 they stood 1st in Conference and equalized their career best wins 62 against 20 and lost Conference finals to the Spurs 4-1. In 2005 they repeated last year performance with 54 wins and 28 losses and lost finals this time to Dallas Mavericks 4-2. 2006, 3rd year consecutively the Suns stood 1st in Conference scored a record best 61 wins with 21 losses, this time lost to Spurs 4-2 in semi-finals. In 2009-2010 season they stood 2nd in Conference and raced to the finals but this time lost to one of their oldest rivals the Lakers 4-2.
