Initially known as the Los Angeles Open, the first season of the golf tournament was played at the Los Angeles Country Club. The venue for the Los Angeles Open continued to change over the years from Brookside Golf Course, Rancho Park Golf Course, Inglewood Country Club, Fox Hills Country Club and Griffith Park to Wilshire Country Club, El Caballero Club and Hillcrest Country Club. In 1973, Riviera Country Club became the tournament's home where it has been played since then excluding two seasons. The tournament was rebranded as Nissan Open following a sponsorship deal with Nissan that lasted for almost twenty-one years. Since 2008, the tournament is officially known as the Northern Trust Open. Harry Cooper was the first champion of the tournament in 1926. Some of the other winners of Trust Open include Denny Shut, Craig Wood, Jimmy Hines, Johnny Bulla, Arnold Palmer, Billy Casper, Charlie Sifford, Corey Pavin, Nick Faldo, Ernie Els, Robert Allenby, Adam Scott, Mike Weir, Tom Kite, Ted Schulz, Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker and Aaron Baddley. Lloyd Mangrum and Macdonald Smith hold the record of winning the tournaments four times. Arnold Palmer and Ben Hogan have won the tournament three times each. Players that have won the tournament twice include Fred Couples, Lanny Wadkins, Gil Morgan, Tom Watson, Paul Harney and Sam Snead.
