Early History

The Rangers were formed in 1926 after the runaway success of the first NHL team owned by George Lewis Rickard who also owned Madison Square Garden. As Rickard was nicknamed ‘Tex,’ his new franchise came to be known as ‘Tex’s Rangers.’ In keeping with the name, the first logo that was designed for the franchise featured a cowboy riding on a galloping horse and carrying a hockey stick.  However, later on it was replaced with the diagonal letters R-A-N-G-E-R-S running across the emblem.
