The NBA All-Star Weekend has always been significant for the league. Because of that a lot of different activities and events have been held by the NBA every year to make it a lot more exciting. The NBA All-Star Legends Game was an important part of the festivity. The game began in 1984 and ended in the year 1993. Its conclusion merited somewhat of a revamp of the All-Star Weekend schedule. The NBA also decided to add another exhibition game to the annual All-Star Weekend and as a result of that the Rookies Game began to be played.
A Look Back
The Rookies Game format was more or less the same as that of the Legends Game. The only difference was that it was to feature rookies only. The Rookies were players who were in their first year in the NBA. The first two editions featured teams that had their own new names but in the year 1996, the names were changed to the traditional West Vs East model.
In the year 1999, the All-Star Weekend itself was cancelled because of the NBA lockout. Because of that the rookies of 1998 could not take part in the Rookies Challenge. So to give them a chance to compete, in 2000 the format was tweaked. That year the game was played between a team of first year players (Rookies) against a team of second year players (Sophomores).
In the year 2012, the name of the game was changed to the Rising Stars Challenge but that was not the only thing that was changed. The teams that year were picked by Shaquille O'Neal and Charles Barkley. The teams were named Team Shaq and Team Chuck and they shared sophomores and rookies for the first time ever. The two picked the sides for the 2013 edition as well. In 2014, the teams were picked by Chris Webber and Grant Hill.
A Radical Change
The NBA decided to spice things up a little and in 2015, the game received a brand new format. Now it was Team USA Vs Team World and both sides were to pick three sophomores and three rookies each. The game had two halves of 25 minutes duration, each. The players were picked via voting that was done by the assistant coaches of the league.
Team USA Vs Team World
The game has been played under the Team USA Vs Team World format four times till now. The first game was won by Team World 121-112 while the second edition in 2016 was won by Team USA 157-154. Team World then went on to win the next two Rising Star Challenges in 2017 and 2018, 150-141 and 155-124 respectively.
Will Team USA reduce the deficit in 2019 or will Team World prove to be too strong for them for the third year running? These questions will be answered at the Spectrum Center soon. If you want to catch the action live, then book your NBA Rising Stars tickets now.
