NBA Finals: The Ultimate Glory
The biggest stage in the game beckons the best in the business once again. It is the platform that a certain Michael Jordan undisputedly ruled, where Kobe Bryant thrived and where LeBron James did the unthinkable time and time again.
The NBA Finals are the culmination of a long and arduous season where the best players in the world give it their all in order to give their teams a shot at the prestigious Larry O’ Brien Championship Trophy.
A number of name changes have occurred over the years. The competition was known as the NBA Championship Series from 1950 till 1985. For a brief period afterwards, it was called The Showdown before the present name was adopted in 1986.
To date, 19 different franchises have come out victorious in the NBA Finals. The Golden State Warriors are two-time defending champions while the Boston Celtics hold the record for the most titles with more than 15 wins. In terms of appearances, the Minneapolis/Los Angeles Lakers lead the charts with over 30 trips to the finals.
The Lakers are also the second most successful team in NBA history. Together with the Celtics, they are the only other team to reach double figures of title wins. The Chicago Bulls ruled the roost during the 1990s. Led by the greatest of all time Michael Jordan and with legendary coach Phil Jackson at the helm, the Bulls won six championships between 1991 and 1998. That Bulls team also ranks among the greatest dynasties the game has ever seen and is often credited with popularizing the NBA to a global audience during their domination in the 90s.
Likely Contenders
The Golden State Warriors were in full dynasty mode last year when they swept aside the Cleveland Cavaliers in four straight games to lift the NBA crown for the third time in four seasons. They are at it once again and seem to be in no mood to slow down.
Having already secured their place in the playoffs, Stephen Curry and company are sitting atop the Western Conference table and on course to secure the Conference Championship before beginning their quest for another NBA title in a couple of weeks’ time.
Over in the Eastern bracket, newly-crowned Central Division Champions Milwaukee Bucks lead the Conference table. With a playoff berth secured, the 1971 NBA Champions are in a great position to add the Conference title to their trophy cabinet.
High-flying Toronto Raptors will be battling the Bucks for the right to be called Conference Champions. Other playoff contenders on the Eastern side include the Philadelphia 76ers, Indiana Pacers and the Boston Celtics among others.
Joining the Golden State Warriors in the playoffs from the Western bracket will be the Denver Nuggets, Houston Rockets and the LA Clippers among others. Get your NBA Finals tickets now to see who goes all the way this time around.
