Jon Jones is one of the most formidable UFC heavyweight fighters on the circuit today. He is now all set to step inside the Octagon for a fight, which if he wins, might make him the UFC Heavyweight champion.
The Early Days
Jon Jones was an exceptional wrestler even during his high school days. His talents however were not restricted to wrestling because he also used to play football as a defensive lineman. He got enrolled at the Iowa Central Community College where he won a national level JUCO championship. After a while, he moved to the Morrisville State College to get a Criminal Justice degree. That did not last for long and Jones quit studies to become an MMA fighter.
In April of 2008, he kicked off his mixed martial arts career as a professional fighter. Jon Jones compiled a 6-0 record over the next three months. Then out of the blue, he was asked to fight in the UFC as a replacement. The fight was just two weeks away but Jones being Jones accepted the challenge to fight in the biggest MMA promotion in the world.
Early UFC Impact
Jon Jones made his Ultimate Fighting Championship debut on August 9, 2008 at UFC 87 against Andre Gusmao. Jones was replacing Tomasz Drwal and eventually won the fight via unanimous decision.
Then in his second UFC fight, Jones faced off against Stephan Bonnar at UFC 94 on January 31, 2009. Jones won that fight through a unanimous decision as well. His third fight was against Jake O'Brien at UFC 100 on July 11, 2009 and he won that fight too but this time via tap out. Because of his performances, in September he signed a four-year deal with the UFC.
Jon Jones: A UFC Star
The UFC contract was just the beginning for Jones. He kept on taking on strong fighters and he kept on winning. On August 1, 2010, Jones took on Vladimir Matyushenko who was a former IFL Light Heavyweight Champion. Declaring that he wanted a fight against a top three opponent, on February 5, 2011, Jones beat the previously unbeaten Ryan Bader via tap out. Up next was a UFC Light Heavyweight Championship shot.
Jon Jones' biggest fight of his career up till that point was against Mauricio Rua, the reigning UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. In the UFC 128 fight Jones brutalized Rua to be crowned the new UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. In the process he also became the youngest fighter in UFC history to win the belt.
Suspensions and Comebacks
Jon Jones went on to beat every challenger that was put in his way. Unfortunately for him, he was involved in a hit-and-run accident as a result of which he was not only stripped off his title but was also suspended from the UFC for an indefinite period of time. Almost six months later, he was brought back. He beat Ovince Saint Preux on his return but was suspended again by USADA for doping.
He made his return to the UFC to take on the reigning light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier at UFC 214. Jones won the fight to become a two time UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. He was once again flagged by USADA for another doping violation and he was stripped of the belt once again.
Jon Jones is making his return to the UFC once again and this time he will be up against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 232. These two fighters met the last time in UFC 165 on September 21, 2013 and the fight lasted till the fifth round. It was a slugfest that Jones won via unanimous decision in the end. If that fight is any indication, then fans are about to witness another epic bout. Grab your Jon Jones tickets and watch the former two-time UFC Light Heavyweight Champion make his return to the Octagon, live at the T-Mobile Arena.
