The Crimsons is the name which is given to the forty one varsity teams that play from the Harvard University. All of these teams compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s first division. It was as of 2006 that the number of varsity teams that play from this Ivy League school reached to forty one teams in total. The university competes in baseball, men and women’s basketball, men and women’s crew, cross country, field hockey, fencing, football, men and women’s golf, men and women’s ice hockey, men and women’s lacrosse, rowing, rugby, sailing, skiing, soccer, softball, squash, tennis, swimming and diving, track and field, men and women’s volleyball, water polo, wrestling and rugby.
Supporting the colors crimson, white and black, the official colors of the Harvard University, these varsity teams have been able to win twenty seven championships in total; winning twelve in men’s football, six in golf, four in men’s soccer, three in men’s wresting and one in men’s ice hockey. Coming onto the football team of the Crimsons which originated in 1873; the team has been competing ever since in the Football Bowl Subdivision. They have won a total of ten champions in the Football Bowl Subdivision and are known to establish a long standing rivalry with the football team from the Ivy League, Yale University. The Harvard Crimsons football team became the champions of the Rose Bowl in the year 1920 after which sixteen team members received induction into the College Football Hall of Fame. The Crimsons currently play at the Harvard Stadium that was constructed and opened in 1903. It was the very first concrete stadium that was constructed in the country which changed the way the game was played. The stadium is a U-shaped open stadium that is located in the Allston area of Boston. The stadium can cater to over thirty thousand football fans; however popular games saw up to fifty seven thousand viewers in the aisles. Constructed on thirty one acres of land, the stadium was designed by architect Prof. Louis J. Johnson and the stadium cost a whopping three hundred thousand dollars, at that time. The stadium is known to hold a variety of events apart from football such as track and field games, soccer matches, Olympic Games and even music festivals such as the one held in 1979 in which the Jamaican legend Bob Marley performed.
