Representing the University of Dayton, the Dayton Flyers’ Basketball team is a member of the Atlantic Ten Conference and competes in the NCAA Division 1. The Dayton Flyers are ranked No. 48 in ESPN’s all time ranking for the best basketball programs. Dayton’s first basketball team was created in 1903, when the university was originally called the St. Mary’s Institute and its sports teams were titled as "the Saints". In 1920, when the school administration changed its name, the athletic association also switched its name to Flyers in honor of Wilbur and Orville Wright’s first aircraft that was called the Wright Flyer 1. It was Tom Blackburn’s leadership that led to the team being able to make six appearances in the NIT finals during the late 1950s and the early 1960s. The Dayton Flyers also won the NIT championship for the first time in 1962 within Tom’s reign. The university’s basketball team continued to prevail in the following decades as well, since they were able to reach the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in the 1970s and the Elite Eight in the 80s. Their next championship came in 1990, when they won the Midwestern Collegiate Conference before transferring to the Great Midwest Conference.

Among these, Roosevelt Chapman is the university’s all-time scoring leader for rebounds, assists, and blocked shots. Another player named Chris Wright who graduated from the school in 2011 and is currently playing for the NBA’s Golden State Warriors.
