Columbus Blue Jackets is the team cracking up the ice hockey scene for Columbus.  The team has raised the level of competition for the central division. They are one of the few teams of the Western Conference who know how to play it the hard way. They are the eastern most team in the Western Conference and that perfectly explains their extreme game play. 

The Columbus Blue Jackets are not just the cannons for their fierce game but it is a tradition representing their passion. Since 2007-08’s season, a Napoleon Cannon is fired every time Blue Jackets set their foot on the field.  The cannon is a memorial of handmade Cannon used in the 1857 civil war by Napoleon and his folks. The cannon is placed at their home in Nationwide Arena. It has become a symbol of celebration and glory. Every time Jackets score a goal or win a game, firing the cannon is their celebration call. Since the beginning of this tradition Jackets have celebrated this way for 164 times. These celebrations were for the 103 goals they scored along with 20 victories. In total the cannon has been the opening anthem for 41 games played in the Nationwide Arena.

The team of Columbus Blue Jackets is a true representation of the rich historical state of Ohio. The name Blue Jackets was decided for the team in the same stride.  The aim of naming the team Blue Jackets is to celebrate the jingoism and pride of the state. The name is also a reference to the Civil War history weaved as a part and parcel of Columbus as well as Ohio. The state stood up to Abraham Lincoln’s call offering twenty three infantry regiments.   It is also in the memory of American Revolutionary War’s hero Shawnee who was also known Blue Jacket.

In 2000 Columbus Blue Jackets was formed as the expansion team for the state of Ohio in the National Hockey League. The team representing Ohio ECHL before that was Columbus Chill while Cleveland Barons generally represented the state in other competition.  They had their own way of coming around in the ice hockey sphere. They were validated as a team with a promising future in 2009 when they qualified for the first time in Stanley Cup playoffs. Since then they have taken the high road and they don’t have plan to come down any soon.

The Blue Jackets seem to be in really good shape with a their decent roster .Their current team lineup includes Jared Boll, Derick Brassard, Chris Clark, Mike Commodore, Derek Dorsett, Nikita Filatov, Mathieu Garon, Jan Hejda, Kristian Huselius, Rostislav Klesla, Derek MacKenzie, Steve Mason, Ethan Moreau, Andrew Murray, Marc Methot, Rick Nash, Samuel Pahlsson, Antoine Vermette, Kris Russell, Anton Stralman, R. J. Umberger, Jakub Voracek, Kyle Wilson and Fedor Tyutin. These players have done their team proud by wining various honors and trophies. Rich Nash has been the National Hockey League Foundation Player and has also won the Rocket Richard Trophy. Steve Manson has brought home a Calder Memorial Trophy for the year 2008-09. John H McConnell is the honored member of the team.
