This year’s game will take place in Carson, CA, at the StubHub Center Soccer Stadium on July 16th 2017.
History of the Tournament
The tournament was first played in 1942. From 1942 till 1995, the format of the tournament was different than what it is now. Initially, it was played between the champion of the Primera and the winner of the Mexican Cup. The single match tournament to crown the “super champion” was held at the end of the season at a stadium within the limits of Mexico City. The only exceptional years here were 1968 and 1988, when instead of one, two games were played to determine the ultimate champion.
In case where a team managed to win both the titles – the league championship and the cup, they would be awarded the title of Campeonísimo. Till today, such an occurring has happened on five occasions – Leon in 1949, Guadalajara in 1970, Cruz Azul in 1969, Necaxa in 1995 and Puebla in 1990.
The New Format
After the 1995 tournament, the format for the super game was changed. The championship was divided into shorter seasons called the Apertuta and Clausura. However, two years after the introduction of the new format, the Mexican Football Federation canceled the Mexican Cup. Hence, the Campeon De Campeones tournament was eventually postponed. For the next few years, the competition did not take place and it returned in the 2002-2003 season. This time, it was played between the champions of Apertura and Clausura of the season. For the next four years, the tournament took place normally, after which, it was put on hold again between 2007 and 2011.
In 2012, the Mexican Cup was rebranded as the Liga MX and the tournament was started again. A friendly game was played between the champions of Liga MX (first division) and Ascenso MX (second division). The rules again underwent some changes as in the 2013-2014 season. It was decided by the Liga MX that a Campeon De Campeones game can be played between the champions of Copa MX Apertura 2013 and Apertura 2013.
