A Little History
The AFC Championship Game traces its roots back to the year 1970. That was the year when the American Football League and the National Football Leaguer merged with each other. Prior to that arrangement, the AFL Championship Game used to decide the league champion and one of the participants in the Super Bowl. The other side came from the NFL.
Before the merger, the National Football League had six more sides than the American Football League. Needless to say, a realignment was needed to address that imbalance. Two conferences were formed with each conference containing the same number of franchises. So, the Steelers, the Browns and the Colts made the move to join the existing ten AFL sides and those thirteen teams formed the AFC. The other thirteen teams made up the NFC.
The Houston Texans are the only team in the AFC that has yet to play in the championship game. The Seattle Seahawks are the side that has played in both the NFC as well as the AFC Championship Game.
The Record Books
The American Football Conference Championship Game has dished up plenty of epic games over the years. The Pittsburgh Steelers hold the record for appearing in the most AFC Championship Game with sixteen. Not even any National Football Conference team has made it to so many championship games. Interestingly enough, eleven of these games were held in Pittsburgh. Unfortunately however, they also hold the unwanted record of losing the most AFC Championship Games too with eight losses to their name.
The New England Patriots hold the record for winning the most AFC Championship Games. They have won it a record ten times with five of those triumphs eventually ending up as Super Bowl wins too. The Patriots made it to the AFC Championship Game seven straight times between 2011 and 2017 which is also a record.
Between 1990 and 1993, the Buffalo Bills went on to win the AFC Championship four consecutive times. No other AFC side has been able to replicate or beat that streak.
The Latest AFC Championship Game
The AFC Championship Game is not too far away now and the draw is yet to be decided. It is just too close to call right now and that has added to the excitement of the fans. The New England Patriots have won the last two times and they will be looking to complete a hat-trick this season. Will their dominance end this time around or will they represent the AFC in the Super Bowl? It should make for compelling viewing and you can be a part of the action by booking your AFC Championship Game tickets.
