Born in 1951, Zakir Hussain is an Indian tabla musician, composer and an actor. He was born in a family of iconic tabla players. His father was Alla Rakha, who taught the young Zakir every melody and tune he knew. Attending the St. Michael High School located in Mahim and then St. Xaviers College in Mumbai, Zakir Hussain was taught the art of tabla playing at home. Even in his naïve years, Zakir Hussain was playing almost one hundred and fifty concerts on an annual basis. The child prodigy started touring from the age of twelve and first performed in the US in 1970. Ever since then, Zakir Hussain is a force to reckon with.
Apart from performing regularly, the tabla player is also the proud co-founder of “World Music Supergroup, Table Beat Science”. The music group with Bill Laswell as its other co-founder presents a mixture of Asian underground, Hindustani, electronic, bass and drum music. Musicians that make up the supergroup include Zakir Hussain, Trilok Gurtu, Talvin Singh, Bill Laswell, Ustad Sultan Khan, Fabian Alsultany, Karsh Kale and DJ Disk. To date Zakir Hussain has released three studio albums with “Table Beat Science” namely Tala Matrix, Live in San Francisco at Stern Grove and Talamanam Sound Clash: Further Adventures in Hypercussion.
Zakir Hussain’s album, “Global Drum Project” released in 1991 brought forth massive success for the artist. Produced by Rykodisc label, the album won Zakir the Grammy Award from the category of “Best World Music Album”. It was also awarded a prestigious Grammy for “Best Contemporary World Music Album” in 2009. His music compositions in the film “Vanaprastham” won awards at the AFI Los Angeles International Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival, Istanbul International Film Festival, National Film Awards and Mumbai International Film Festival. Apart from this film, Zakir has also composed music and played tabla for movies namely “Little Buddha”, “Apocalypse Now”, “The Mystic Masseur” and “Custody”.
As an actor that artist is seen working in the documentaries, “Zakir and his Friends” and “The Speaking Hand: Zakir Hussain and the Art of the Indian Drum” released in 1998 and 2003 respectively. Furthermore, Zakir has also acted alongside Inder Lal in the 1983 film “Heat and Dust”. As a musician, Zakir Hussain’s repertory heeds no bounds.
