Born on April 1933, the singer, songwriter, actor and philanthropist Willie Nelson is most prominent for his contributions towards the "outlaw country" a subgenre challenging the conservatism of Nashville. Throughout his career, he has produced some of the most popular country songs of all times that became country standards including Crazy, Hello Walls, Pretty Paper and Funny How Time Slips Away and many more.
Willie Nelson has written more than 2,500 songs and has released around 300 albums so far. He wrote his first song at the age of 7 and toured locally in high school with Bohemian Polka as their guitar player and lead singer. Dropping out of college to pursue his musical career, Nelson continued writing songs and move to Nashville in 1960. Soon the long-haired, bandana-wearing guitarist garnered a fan following and started producing top hit albums. Critical success of his albums Shortgun Willie in 1973, Red Headed Stranger in 1975 and Stardust in 1978 made him one of the most recognized artists in the country music. Stardust became most successful album of his career reaching no. 1 on Billboard Country Albums chart and selling five million copies. The album’s single Blue Eyes Crying in The Rain was Nelson’s first song to reach no. 1 and it earned him his first Grammy Award for Best Country Local Performance in 1975. But that was just the prologue of the singer and songwriter who re-drew the borders of country music. Throughout 80s and 90s, he produced hundreds of hit songs and became the icon of country music.
The adventurous Nelson can sing just about anything introducing new styles in his music. He released Countryman in 2005 which incorporated elements of reggae.
