The band hails from Portland in Oregon in the United States of America and from Auckland in New Zealand. The main musical genres that they create all of their exceptional music are lo-fi, indie rock, garage rock and psychedelic rock. They have been actively been a part of the music industry since 2010 till the present day. The music record label companies that they have been associated with have been the Jagjaguwar Records and Fat Possum Records.
In 2010, Ruban Nielson released a song called "Ffunny Ffriends" on his popular Bandcamp profile on the internet. The song was a hit for listeners; however no further information on who had created the song was given on the profile. Many bloggers got a drift of the song and began to post it all over the social media. They all gave it their best to find out who had created the song. Ultimately, Nielson came up with naming the song as "Unknown Mortal Orchestra".
On the 21st of June 2011, the Unknown Mortal Orchestra successfully released their self-titled album that was released on Fat Possum Records. Instantly this album created a huge rave among avid music lovers and went on to reach an immense amount of critical acclaim. Pitchfork ranked the album as 8.1 and gave it a stunning review. By 2012, the group went on to winning the Taite Music Prize for their impressive album. At the 47th annual Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards, the album was nominated in the category of Best alternative Album. Nielson won in the category of Best Male Artist.
The band announced in September 2012 that they had signed a contract deal with Jagjaguwar Records. They began working on the second studio recorded album. This album of theirs is called II and came out on the 5th of February in 2013. The album was received well by both their fans and crtics. The popular Clash Music ended up giving them a rating of 9 from 10. The songs on this album of their surely features a lot of glowing warmth. Moreover, it seems as though the band took a great take on the ‘60s psych music that comprises of various fuzz and hooks that is going to keep you captivated. In 2013, the band has been solely capitalizing on the tremendous success that they have witnessed with their second album. They have been touring extensively in the United States, Australia and their hometown in New Zealand as well as making many stopovers in European countries.
In March 2013, the Unknown Mortal Orchestra opened their North American tour at Foxygen. The same month, Fuse Television’s 30 labeled them as one of the must-watch musicians at SXSW. They are known for their amazing live performances and have been performing live to completely sold out shows in both North America as well as in Europe. Today the band enjoys an immense amount of fan following. Due to their successful live shows, the band announced in April 2013, that they will be extending their tour until the end of 2013. They are going to be performing in many mega hit European festivals as well as in Lowlands, Pukkelpop and Roskilde Festival. On the 25th of February in 2013, the band made their first television appearance by coming on the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and performing their song "So Good At Being In Trouble".

American-New Zealand rock band Unknown Mortal Orchestra recently shared a new song titled SB-05. It is the latest installment of the musicians’ instrumental series which they usually share on Christmas day. The track is 27 minutes long and follows up SB-04 that came out in 2016.
Led by Ruban Nielson, Unknown Mortal Orchestra released their latest music record Multi-Love in 2015. The band contributed the cover of Shakedown Street to the Grateful Dead covers compilation album titled Day of the Dead in 2016.
