Band history

The English electronic group was formed in 1987. Hyde and Smith joined with bass players Alfie Thomas and Baz Allen and drummer Bryn Burrows to from Underworld MK1. Under the label of Sire Records, the band released their debut album, Underneath the Radar, in 1988. The title song from the album became their first hit on the Billboard charts. Underworld MK1 disbanded in 1990 and a year later the duo resurfaced, this time joined by Darren Emerson, who completed their techno trio.

In 1994, they released dubnobasswithmyheadman, an album which is considered a defining work in their career. It incorporated a range of dance rhythms and minimum lyrics to create a unique techno/rock sound. The album was well-received and included danceable hits like “Dirty Epic” and “Cow Girl.”

“Born Slippy”

In 1996, Underworld released their fourth studio album Second Toughest in The Infants. The album proved to be a commercial success, with its release coinciding with that of the famous movie, “Trainspotting”. “Born Slippy. NUXX” was the hit single from the album that featured as the soundtrack for the movie and instantly became a dance music hit. The track has sold over a million copies and has appeared on several mashups, remixes and compilations. The single “Dark and Long” also featured on the movie.

The first song from the album, “Juanita/Kiteless/To Dream of Love” is Underworld’s longest song to date. The success of the album propelled the band to fame and they continued to produce and record great music in later years.

Underworld’s tour in 1999 was very well received and prompted the release of their first live album, Everything, Everything. In 2002, the duo’s highly acclaimed album, AHundredDaysOff followed. It charted at the second position on the Billboard Top Electronic Albums chart.

Oblivion with Bells (2007) was the band’s first studio album in five years.
