When the world was speculating the turn of the millennium bringing about everything from crashing computer systems and planes to the end of the world as we know, Alex Omes and Russel Faibisch were apparently plotting the reincarnation of the Woodstock Music Festival, albeit along lines that could would entail anything but "peace". The first two events held in 1999 and 2000 in South Beach at Miami Beach, served more as after parties to the annual Winter Music Conference. However, come 2001, the Ultra Music Festival was injected with a life of its own due to the burgeoning attendance and was moved to Bayfront Park located in Downtown Miami.
The Ultra Music Festivals from 2001-2005 featured cranked-up performances from both established DJs such as Tiesto, Paul Van Dyke, Paul Oakenfold and Sander Kleinenberg as well as upcoming ones such as EC Twins, Photek and DJ Craze that set the visitors writhing feverishly. With the Ultra Music Festival relocating to the Bicentennial Park for its seventh installment, the 2007 event underwent a frenetic splitting whereby becoming a two-day event that was attended by more than 50,000 crazed music seekers. With the following year marking its tenth anniversary, the Ultra Music Festival went into overdrive for its 2008 happening and rounded up a force of the who's who of the world of electronic music. Veterans such as Armin Van Buuren, Paul Van Dyke, Tiesto, Ferry Corsten, Carl Cox, Rabbit in the Moon and Benny Benassi were joined by eager beavers such as Deadmau5, Annie Mac, David Guetta, Pete Tong to name a few, in setting the scene ablaze on multiple stages and firing up the 70,000 strong crowds.
Featuring DJ regulars and other crossover acts such as The Prodigy, The Whip, The Tings Tings and Crystal Castles, the 2009 Ultra Music Festival was completely "Boom Boom Powed" by The Black Eyed Peas. With the 2009 event, the UMF blasted through the 100,000 attendance mark and achieved sold-out status for the first time in its 12 year history, seeing the likes of John Digweed, Sasha, Above & Beyond and Swedish House Mafia join the usual suspects. In 2010, the Ultra Music Festival morphed into a trident of musical storms that were churned up by an entire army of DJs, vocalist and musicians trooping in from all over the world. Whilst the main stages were commanded by heavyweights such as Tiesto, Benny Benassi, Fedde La Grande, The Chemical Brothers, Jessica Sutta, will.i.am and David Guetta, the various smaller stages and domes were put through their paces by a whole fleet of anxious DJs. Armin Van Buuren threw his own party for the 500th session of his weekly radio show A State of Trance that had the likes Ferry Corsten, Gareth Emery, Skrillex, Sander Van Doorn, Alex M.O.R.P.H and cosmic gate blast their sizzling vibes live to 150,000 attendees and over the airwaves to over 20 million listeners.
For the 2012 event, the Ultra Music Festival is making a comeback the Bayfront Park. The big boys of the Disc Jockeying world, such as Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, Carl Cox, David Guetta, Fatboy Slim, John Digweed, Ferry Corsten and Sander Van Doorn are all going to descend upon the venue, with "Dubsteppers" such as Skrillex, Bassnectar and Pretty Lights stomping in as well.
