The Tony Awards are the highest accolades in the theatre world all across the globe. They are to theatre what Academy Awards are to cinema, Grammy Awards are to music and Emmy Awards are to television. For the sixty-ninth ceremony, the Tony Awards will honor the best of the best that debuted in the Broadway 2014-15 season.

The movers and shakers of the 2014-15 season

During the 2014-15 season on Broadway, many plays and musicals garnered appreciation from theatergoers, fans and critics.

The new plays that debuted during the season include the family drama The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Islamophobia-oriented Disgraced, religious-themed Hand to God and the history-twisted Wolf Hall Parts One & Two. All four of these are nominated for ‘Best Play’.

The musicals that nabbed popularity starting from their premiere include An American in Paris, Fun Home, Something Rotten! and The Visit. These four musicals are nominees for ‘Best Musical’.

Four plays and three musicals have seen a successful revival and a Tony nomination in the respective category. These include the plays The Elephant Man, Skylight, This is Our Youth and You Can’t Take it With You. On the other hand, the revived musicals are The King and I, On the Town and On the Twentieth Century.

And the nominees are…

The leading actors and actresses list this time around includes some of the big names from Hollywood; Bradley Cooper, Helen Mirren, Bill Nighy, Carey Mulligan, Ken Watanabe and Chita Rivera among others.

The ‘Best Book of a Musical’ is contested among An American in Paris, Fun Home, Something Rotten! and The Visit. The latter three are also nominated for ‘Best Original Score Written for the Theatre’ along with The Last Ship.

All in all, the most nominations have been garnered by An American in Paris with an impressive twelve. Right behind it is Something Rotten! with ten, whereas the third place is taken by The King and I with nine. Individually, Bob Crowley leads with four nominations; two in costume design and two in scenic design.

The presenters and the performers

As announced earlier, the 69th Tony Awards will be presented by theatre personalities Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming. Both, the American actress and the British actor, are renowned for their work on television, theatre and even on the big screen.

The two will call on the casts from the shows nominated for ‘Best Revival of a Musical’ and ‘Best Musical’ for the ceremony performances. Some of the names in the list are Kristin Chenoweth, Christian Borle, Brad Oscar, Kelli O’Hara, Brian d’Arcy James and Ken Watanabe.

Following tradition, the Tony Awards will also celebrate Broadway’s other hit makers such as Finding Neverland, Gigi and It Shoulda Been You. The cast from these will perform on stage for the night’s event including Vanessa Hudgens, Tyne Daly and Kelsey Grammer among others.

Sixteenth time is the charm

The American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League decided that the 69th Tony Awards will be presented at the prestigious Radio City Music Hall.

The first Tony Awards held at the venue were in 1997, the year preceding the golden jubilee ceremony. Since 2000, Radio City Music Hall has hosted the Tonys consecutively with the exception of 2011 and 2012 when they were held at the Beacon Theatre.

Now for the sixteenth overall and the third consecutive time, Radio City Music Hall is all set to bring the stars of theatre together for the eventful night. So grab Tony Awards tickets and enjoy the show.
