The first song "Make Me Wanna Die" by the group was featured in the 2010 movie, Kick-Ass and was also performed at the Warped Tour 2010 by the band. It was a hit song and received positive reviews, reaching number one position on the UK Rock chart. The group found a balance between post-grunge and hard rock, taking nods from female-fronted ensembles including The Runaways and Hole. The band released its debut album titled Light Me Up in 2010 in the UK, spawning three fairly successful songs like "Goin' Down", "My Medicine" and "Make Me Wanna Die". In an MTV interview, the band’s lead singer Taylor Momsen cited Oasis and The Beatles along with Nirvana as the major influences. She also said that her personal inspirations include Joan Jett and Kurt Cobain. In 2012, The Pretty Reckless released a soundtrack Frankenweenie Unleashed!, for the 2012 movie "Frankenweenie". The fourth single by the band "Kill Me" came out in the same year. This single was featured in the final episode of the serial "Gossip Girl".
