Led by Larry Gatlin, the band was formed in 1979 after Larry established his footing in the business. The trio however, had been singing gospel and country since their childhood. Larry’s tenor voice and wonderful songwriting skills were recognized by Dottie West, a country diva of that time, and she helped him with his professional career. Initially starting as a backing vocalist for Kris Kristofferson, Larry soon landed a record deal with Monument Records and began recording his first album.
‘The Pilgrim’ was released to critical acclaim in 1973. The album made its way to the Country Charts and also spawned hits like Bitter They Are, Harder They Fall and Sweet Becky Walker. The next album ‘Rain/Rainbow’ came out in 1974 and churned out a hit Delta Dirt which peaked at number 14 on the country singles. The following record ‘High Time’ came out in 1975 and included the smash hit Broken Lady. The single won Larry a Grammy Award which established him as a successful solo artist.
Larry teamed up with his brothers in his 1976 album which he aptly titled Gatlin with his Family & Friends. Later, Steve and Rudy were also featured in a number hit singles such as Love Is Just a Game and I Don’t Wanna Cry. This collaboration was officially named as the ‘Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers’ in 1979 and soon it emerged as a capable country band. The band came up with their debut record Straight Ahead in the same year. Peaking at seven on the Country Chart, the album went Platinum after a short period. The song All the Gold in California became extremely popular with the listeners and also won the band an Academy of Country Music Award.
The Gatlin Brothers released their next album ‘Help Yourself’ in 1980. It received positive reviews from the critics and also charted on US Country Albums. This success was followed by ‘Not Guilty’ in 1981 that entered top 10 on country chart. Throughout 1980s, the band had a series of successful albums like ‘Houston to Denver’ and ‘Partners’ that strengthened their repute.
The band kept on making music in the following decade. However, their touring came to a pause after the release of their 1992 album ‘Adios’. The Gatlin Brothers is one of those country bands who started the trend of music videos for the songs and introduced country-pop to their local community. Among these music videos, ‘The Lady Takes the Cowboy Everytime’ is most famous. The band also performed at a number of notable shows and gatherings including a National Anthem performance during the 1989 World Series.
With the start of the new century, when contemporary country was on the rise, the commercial prominence of the band declined. The band relocated in Branson and Larry began his vocal training with an opera coach after he went through a surgery. Honing his falsetto skills, he rose as a theatre actor and starred in The Will Rogers Follies which played on Broadway. The band’s most recent album is Pilgrimage that was released in 2009. Besides that, the group also collaborated with a number of artists and their latest credits include 100 Christmas and The Old Rugged Cross.
They are now back on the road after a long time and the band has lined up multiple shows across the country. The Gatlin Brothers tickets are in great demand as fans will be seeing them live once again. Grab your share today and watch their incredible performance when they drop in your city.
