This sensational band came into being in West Sussex, England, in 1976. Although, since its inception it has seen many line-up changes, at present it consists of great musicians like Jason Cooper (percussion and drums), Roger O’Donnell (keyboards), Simon Gallup (keyboards and bass guitar) and Robert Smith (keyboards, guitar and lead vocals). Smith is the only one who has remained with the band from its earliest days, when school friends got together to make some awesome music. In those days the band was called ‘Easy Cure’. Like all struggling bands, The Cure also recorded demo tapes and distributed them. They soon got signed up by Polydor Records and the band’s first single "Killing an Arab" was released in 1978. While, the debut song won them many new fans and the music critics got to know them, the song also got them blamed for racism. However, the song was based on Albert Camus’s novel, ‘The Stranger’, and was not meant to be a racist number.
The band’s debut album, Three Imaginary Boys, came out a year later in 1979. Unfortunately, the album couldn’t give the band what it was looking for; commercial and critical success. But all of this would change with the release of their second album. Seventeen Seconds was released in 1980 and was instant hit. It reached position no. 20 on the UK charts and one of its singles, "A Forest", became the talk of the town. It reached position no. 31 on the UK singles chart, making it the band’s first UK hit song. The album was not only a commercial success but a hit amongst music critics as well. "For a group as young as The Cure, it seems amazing that they have covered so much territory in such a brief time", commented the NME.
The Cure, while largely an alternative rock-gothic rock band, has however refused to be labeled as either. For lead vocalist Robert Smith, the band plays too diverse of music to be labeled as being a band of one particular genre. "We’re not categorisable. I suppose we were post-punk when we came out, but in total it’s impossible […] I just play Cure music, whatever that is." Perhaps for this reason alone they have been able to successfully release the number of albums over all these years! Some of their more memorable albums have been, The Cure, Wild Mood Swings, Wish, Disintegration, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, and many more.
The Cure is credited with the start of alternative rock music. Many alternative rock bands like My Chemical Romance, Interpol and many others have made a career out of following the band’s style. The band’s popularity transcends any and all boundaries. In addition to other bands following in their footsteps, their music has been taken into movies as well. Famous Hollywood movies were named after their songs like "Just Like Heaven" and "Boys Don’t Cry". In addition, The Cure is famous for making great music videos as well. It seems they are as good in front of a camera as they are in front of a mic!
This band of four is famous for putting up a spectacular show for its fans. Their concerts are unique both in terms of content and style. The Cure concerts are just an experience in themselves. They are also a "must attend" for those who consider themselves to be true fans of alternative rock-gothic rock music. Are you one of those fans? Well what is the wait for?
