Pursuing music

She learned to play the guitar and then went on to learn more instruments. Now, Sultana can play, bass, saxophone, synthesizer, drums, piano, mandolin and pan flute.

In 2008, Tash Sultana became the vocalist of the group, Mindpilot which contained three more members, David Herbert, Emily Daye and Patrick O’ Brien. Inspired by legendary groups like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, they made quite a name for themselves by appearing as finalists in several Battle of the Bands competitions including, FreeZA Push Start and Espy Artist Showdown. Plus, they also went on to support the AC/DC tribute band, ‘Thunderstruck.’ Mindpilot also played at a number of festivals which helped them gain popularity at the national level.

Going viral

In 2012, Mindpilot’s journey came to an end which led to Tash Sultana create her YouTube channel in order to take her music to a wider audience. She uploaded a video of herself performing her first original song, Blackbird on May 14, 2014. The track showcased her insane guitar playing skills and brought her way a lot of recognition. A year later, she released videos of three more songs, Brain Flower, More Than I Should and Higher. Out of those, the video of Higher has been streamed more than four hundred thousand times on SoundCloud so far.

In 2016, Sultana unveiled that she will be releasing her debut extended play, ‘Notion’ later in the year. She also dropped the title-track from the EP on February 16th. The song was driven by alternative rock sound and received over three million hits on YouTube. A couple of months later, she came out with the EP’s second single, Gemini and on May 17th, Sultana appeared at the TEDxUniMelb where she wowed the crowd with her amazing performance.

Tash Sultana then released her third and last single from the EP titled, Jungle. The song turned out to be an instant hit and landed at the thirty ninth spot on the Alternative Songs chart. In addition, she performed the track for the first time on American late-night talk show, ‘Late Night with Seth Myers.’ The track also made it to the third spot on ‘Triple J Hottest 100’ list. On September 23, 2016, she put out her first extended play, ‘Notion’ through her own independent record label, Lonely Lands Records. The EP featured six songs including live versions of Big Smoke, Pt 1 and Big Smoke Pt 2 and peaked at the eighth spot in Australia. She also won the J Award in the same year.

Setting out on tour

Tash Sultana fan base grew once ‘Notion’ had come out. The EP also earned her four ARIA Award nominations in 2017 including two in categories, ‘Best Independent Release’ and ‘Breakthrough Artist of 2017.’ Moreover, she spawned two new singles, Murder to the Mind and Mystik the same year, both of which climbed to the eight spot in New Zealand.

Sultana is now gearing up to release her first studio album. For now, she is scheduled to kick off the North American leg of her ‘Notion World Tour’ with a show at the Fox Theater Pomona.
