The Formative Years
The Stray Cats were inspired by the likes of Gene Vincent, Carl Perkins and Eddie Cochran. It did not take them too long to generate a sizeable fan following in New York. Then all of a sudden the Stray Cats decided to make the move to England for a while. They first appeared on the radar in the year 1979.
They began to attract interest from record labels by the middle of the 1980s. They were making quite an impact and then at a show in London they met Dave Edmunds and decided to work with him. As a result of that, the Stray Cats came out with their debut self-titled album in 1981 which was released only in the UK.
"Stray Cats" was a big success in the country and received four and a half stars out of five. It also climbed to number six on the UK Albums chart and its tracks Runaway Boys and Rock This Town both made it to number nine on the UK Top 40. The latter also made it to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's list of the "500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll."
The Stray Cats next album "Gonna Ball" did not make a big impact but its predecessor "Built for Speed" more than make up for it in 1982. The record was their first album to come out in the US and received four and a half stars from AllMusic. It went to number two on the Billboard charts and stayed there for a whopping twenty six weeks. Not only that, but the album also was certified twice platinum in both Canada and the US.
That was followed by another successful album "Rant n' Rave with the Stray Cats" that hit the stores in August of 1983. It made it to the twenty seventh spot on the Billboard 200 and its track "(She's) Sexy + 17 went all the way to number five on the Billboard Hot 100.
Break Ups and Comebacks
The Stray Cats have gone on multiple hiatuses over the years. The first of those came in 1984. They returned and released five studio albums till 1993 before taking another break from music. This time the hiatus went for a while longer but eventually ended in 2004, the year their most recent album "Rumble in Brixton" came out. The Stray Cats went dormant again in 2009 before resurfacing in 2018.
