Best Songs of Steely Dan

Contrary to all other popular rock and roll bands, Steely Dan has always been different. The group has never been seen in limelight and they’ve never been fond of talking to the media. During their early days, the group played songs which had complex harmonies and were different from blues, folk and other common genres of music. Taking a different route helped the band build a unique image of its own and it also gave birth to the rock and roll genre of music. Consisting of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, the group was formed in 1972 and they enjoyed success from their early years. Throughout the course of their career, the band enjoyed their musical performances with studio musicians but later in 1974, they became a studio-only band. Known as “the perfect musical antiheroes of the Seventies”, Steely Dan has received a Grammy Award and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as well. They’ve released a lot of albums throughout their career and here are some of their most famous songs.

The Boston Rag

This is one of the earliest songs of Steely Dan’s career and it is from their sophomore album- Countdown to Ecstasy. The Boston Rag is one of the songs with complex lyrics and it revolves around the good old college days.

Do It Again

From their album, Can’t Buy A Thrill, this song put forward an entirely different perspective regarding the band. It made the audience realize that the band is very experimental, they can try anything and they have the capability to pull it off too. Do It Again talks about three themes - violence, money and women. Consisting of R&B electric piano, according to the song the above mentioned three things motivate men in life.

Consisting of keyboard, horns and jazzy tunes, Peg is the first song of the band’s biggest bit - Aja. The album was certified double-platinum in 1977 and the singers also give a touch of blues in the song. Peg is the story of a struggling actress who is being promised a big break by a director/photographer. No one knows if she’s actually going to get the chance or if she’s being led on by him.

My Old School

Consisting of Southern soul genre of music, this track is somewhat similar to The Boston Rag and it talks about old school days. My Old School can be viewed in different perspectives depending on your experience; some people will find it nasty, while some may feel sad reminiscing their old memories. The duo added a good amount of humor into the song to make sure that they resonate with people who got hurt during their old school days.

Rikki Don’t Lose That Number

Becoming popular as the band’s biggest hit, Rikki Don’t Lose That Number has the most beautiful tunes of all the songs produced by Steely Dan. The song communicates the utmost efforts of the singer to gain things that he loves.

Apart from all of these songs, there are a number of other famous songs sung by Steely Dan like Kid Charlemagne, Hey Nineteen, Bad Sneakers, Pretzel Logic and many more. The duo will be singing all of these at the performances and Steve Winwood’s songs will be like a cherry on top.
