Slash is the stage name of songwriter and musician Saul Hudson, who came to prominence as the lead guitarist of hard rock group Guns N Roses, as a member of which he attained considerable popularity all over the world through the late eighties and early nineties. While still playing for Guns N Roses, Slash took up a side project which he named Slash’s Snakepit, following which he co-founded the well-known supergroup called Velvet Revolver, through which he gained recognition among mainstream musicians, towards 2000. Then in 2010, he released his first eponymous solo album that featured several renowned performers. As a guitarist, he has garnered extensive critical acclaim. In 2009, he was listed as a runner-up in Time magazine’s selection of ten best guitar players, and in 2011 he was again listed among hundred best guitarists in Rolling Stones, where he was placed on the sixty-fifth spot. In 2004, Slash was given the first place in Total Guitar’s list of a hundred best performed riffs, for his performance in Sweet Child o’ Mine. In 2008, his well-known solo session in Guns N Roses it November Rain brought him a position in Guitar World’s listing of a hundred great guitar solos. In 1981, Slash joined his earliest musical group, Tidus Sloan. Two year later, he formed a band called Road Crew, which he named after the Motorhead track, The Road Crew, which included his childhood pal Steven Adler as the drummer. The band worked together on material that would later serve in making hits such as Rocket Queen, which Slash recorded with Guns N Roses. However, the group disbanded soon enough so that Slash joined the local group Hollywood Rose, where he met guitar player Izzy Stradlin and vocalist Axl Rose.
Slash is known to perform in the hard rock, blues rock and heavy metal genres, and can play instruments other than the guitar, including banjo and bass. He has signed with several labels such as Dik Hayd, UZI Suicide, Sony, Universal, RCA, Roadrunner, Koch, Geffen, EMI, and Eagle Rock Entertainment. Slash had performed with many big rock acts other than Guns n Roses, which include Hollywood Rose, Myles Kennedy, Slash’s Blues Ball, Road Crew and Michael Jackson. In recent years he has also worked as a film and record producer.
Slash owns a collection of over a hundred guitars, from which he likes playing Gibson Les Paul the best and is in fact credited with popularizing the instrument in mainstream sound. Slash’s most used studio guitar is yet another Les Paul of the 1959 model, which he got hold of while playing for Guns N Roses debut album’s recording sessions. Slash claims to have used this model in each Guns N Roses studio album thereafter, while playing another Les Paul model from 1988 in his live performances. Among the many notable instruments he has performed, Slash is best known for playing Gibson EDS-1275, Gibson Les Paul and B.C. Rich Mockingbird.
In 2007, Slash was inducted in Rock Walk of Fame, where his name was put next to the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen and Jimmy Page. In 2010 he was selected as an honoree in the Sunset Strip Music Festival, in which he was invited forth by John Heilman, the West Hollywood mayor, who announced a day in August as Slash Day. Slash’s riff-performance in particular, has brought him much popularity with reference to songs Out ta Get Me, Paradise City and Welcome to the Jungle. In 2010, Total Guitar’s readers voted for Slash’s riff performance in Slither, which earned him the place of runner-up in the magazine’s list of fifty best riffs from the decade. In the same magazine, his riff in the track By the Sword, earned him the twenty-second position. Get in line for those Slash tickets, and be there to watch the legend strumming the strings while you enjoy some of most famous rock tunes.
