How It All Started
To say that Shin Lim is a unique individual would be an understatement. And to think it could all have been so different for the Vancouver-born performer. Lim attended the Lee University School of Music in Tennessee where he was training to be a pianist. However, he was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome some time later and he turned to magic as an alternative career path.
Lim had an interest in magic alongside his music as a kid. That helped him make an easy transition once he found out that a career as a pianist would not be possible anymore. Still, it was a rough start to life as a magician and “sleight of hand” artist.
A later injury to his thumb tendons in 2016, sustained while rehearsing an illusion, nearly cost him his second career. The talented artist was eventually able to pull through after spending about a month on the treatment table. Shin Lim shows are sold out today faster than you can say magic.
A New Road
Lim first came to prominence around 2012 when he began to tour around the world and performed as an illusionist in different countries. He would subsequently participate in the FISM World Championships of Magic in 2015 and emerge victorious in the “Close-Up Card Magic” category. Lim shared the winner’s title with Taiwan’s Horret Wu.
A completely self-taught performer, Lim has learned almost the entirety of his illusion tricks by watching YouTube videos. He completely immersed himself into perfecting his craft and became so good that he even started selling some of the tricks that he had mastered online. In his own words, Lin looks to give “an artistic twist” to his magic. He hopes to change perceptions and redefine card magic by making it “more visual” and “more artistic.”
Lim has YouTube subscribers in excess of 600,000 today. Fans rush to obtain tickets to a Shin Lim performance; such is the popularity of the Massachusetts-based performer these days. For three consecutive years from 2013 to 2015, he bagged the “Best Close-Up Magician” category at the IBM People’s Choice Awards.
Reaching Great Heights
After participating in the 2012 FISM World Championships of Magic, Lim was offered an opportunity to tour around China and showcase his skills. He made quite a few changes to his routine in order to bridge the language barrier and allow the audience to better connect with his performances.
Lim had already been touring around the world a fair bit for different shows and events. This increased after his win at the FISM World Championships of Magic in 2015. He also became a part of The Illusionists, a Broadway-themed magic troupe that comprises of a rotating lineup of tricksters and magicians.
Shortly afterwards, Lim appeared on Penn & Teller: Fool Us and was able to successfully dupe the legendary illusionists. He returned for another appearance in 2017. Once again, he was able to bamboozle the hosts. Lim’s reputation received a major boost after these exploits.
In 2018, Lim participated in the 13th season of America’s Got Talent and went all the way. This win catapulted the young magician to international stardom and he became a household name in the global entertainment industry. Audiences got to enjoy a healthy dose of Shin Lim magic during his performances.
As the winner of AGT 2018, Lim received $1 million in prize money along with a headlining gig at the Paris Theater in Las Vegas. He returned to the AGT stage when he was invited to take part in America’s Got Talent: The Champions, a competition featuring winners and notable finalists from different American and international editions of the Got Talent franchise.
Lim was ultimately able to prevail over Darci Lynne, an Oklahoma-based ventriloquist and winner of season 12 of America’s Got Talent. Get your tickets to the Shin Lim tour at your earliest and prepare to be blown away by the antics of a truly-gifted performer.
