Shelia E was born with music in her blood. Her father, Pete Escovedo is a percussionist with whom she used to perform. Her uncle is the well known singer and songwriter Alejandro Escovedo. Her second uncle, Javier Escovedo is the founding member of the punk band called The Zeroes. Another uncle of hers, Mario Escovedo is a member of the indie rock band called The Dragons. Nicole Richie, the famous personality of Hollywood, is Shiela’s niece. What a talented family of musicians!
Shelia E debuted with Alphonso Johnson’s song "Yesterday’s Dream" in the year 1976. From there, there was only one direction in which she moved and that was up. Two years later, she met Prince who took her under his wings. She went on to do some of her best work ever. She worked with Prince on his sixth studio album named Purple Rain. It was a multi platinum selling album. She provided vocals for two of the songs on the album. They were "Erotic City" and "Let’s Go Crazy". The latter was the most popular song of the album. She went on the Purple Rain tour. What made her act so famous on the tour was that she would invite a man from the audience to sit in front of her on the stage. Then she would tease him by singing "Next Time Wipe The Lipstick Off Your Collar". Now you have an idea why Shelia E tickets were coveted by the masses at that time!
