For a festival to take off without any corporate backing is almost unheard off. Yet Shambhala Music Festival provides the exception to the rule. It is held at the 500-acre Salmo River Ranch near Nelson in the Kootenays. The ranch is owned by Rick and Sue Bundschuh, and run by their children. Jimmy is the executive producer while Anna and Corrine act as producers. During the year, the farm runs on its livestock and hay fields. Yet in the summer, the creators chalked up a plan of bringing in volunteers to convert the electricity-deprived area into a massive electronic music dance-floor. The name grew by word of mouth, and 500 party goers made the inaugural Shambhala Music Festival a resounding success in 1998. A Shambhala Music Festival 4 day pass and camping gear is all that is required by visitors now, as over 2000 volunteers visit annually to work their magic over the ranch before the annual event. The year-round operations office, Shambhala Studios, is located at 206 Lakeside Drive in Nelson.
Numerous renowned artists will light up the stages in the 15th edition of the festival. Every fan with a Shambhala Music Festival 4 day pass will be spoilt for choice, such is the quality of electronic music heavyweights on show. These include Onbeyond Metamedia, the sleepstep and down-tempo bass music mastermind. Originally called Sijay James, he has become a prominent DJ and VJ, and done graphic design for renowned artists and festivals since the early 90s. Progressive psytrance and IDM king Jay Michael brings all his artistic experience of a decade onboard for a massive dose of hypnotic music. Two Timer will look to steal the limelight with his R n’ B and funky mid-tempo music, while DJ Slim Pickins will bring his widely acclaimed Dub Ninja to the party. Pickins has been at the forefront of Canada’s electronic explosion since the turn of the century, and will showcase his class once again at Shambhala 2012. The deep rumbling bass-lines of Kundalini Rising are sure to create havoc, amplified manifold by the passionate music of Ryan Fluxo. Industry old hands Marty L Carter, Naasko, and Chris Komus will elevate minds alongside a host of other names such as El Circo, DJ Rhapsody, Vortex, Dreadsquad, Amani, Andrew Interchill, and many more to complete a stellar lineup. The Shambhala fan base is huge, and this means that various philanthropic aims can be easily met. Donations of around $27,000 per year have been divided among recipients like Selkirk College, Salmo Youth and Community Center Society, Community Resource Society, Salvation Army, S.H.A.R.E. Nelson, Salmo Green Dream, and Nelson Rotary Club.

The attendances have swollen considerably, with the cap of 10,000 reached for the first time during the 2010 festival, and 2011 featuring the first fully sold out festival before dates. It is a perfect setting for acts featuring synchronized dances. The open-air Fractal Forest welcomes the electronic invasion in the natural foliage-rich habitat, while locals are given a laidback home feel at the Living Room, operated since 2000 by Pride (a production company based in the Kootenays) and featuring local artists. The Village Stage and The Pagoda have undergone massive reconstruction, while the Rock Pit continues to be the crossroads for all musical streams at Shambhala.
