Career

New York City based Salt N Pepa was formed back in the year 1985 and was among the first all-female rap groups. They won a Grammy in the category of "Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group" in 1995.

Hot, Cool and Vicious was the group’s debut album but they did not include the single Push It in the collection. Instead it was relegated as a B-side to Tramp which was their first single. It was later when DJ Cameron Paul remixed the song that it became a massive hit. The label reacted to the success of the song and decided to reissue Hot, Cool & Vicious by including the remix version of Push It in the track list. The result was that the album went platinum, becoming the first female rap album to achieve this feat.

The group’s album Very Necessary further cemented heir status in the music industry. The record went on to become the biggest hit rap album by a female act at the time. The year 1994 was a rather fruitful one for Salt N Pepa. The trio got the opportunity to perform a medley of their biggest hits at the MTV Video Music Awards.
