Initially starting off as a folk musician, McGuinn started experimenting with rock n roll after hearing the Beatles’. His mix of folk and rock music made him and the Byrds one of the first bands to try that and gave birth to a whole new genre, folk rock. In recognition of their influence on music, McGuinn along with the band was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991. A rock n’ roll as well as folk music legend, McGuinn’s concerts offer the best of both. To catch this musical legend live in action, buy Roger McGuinn tickets now.
James Roger McGuinn was born on the 13th of July, 1942 in Chicago. Though his parents were not musical, he became involved with music at an early age after listening to an Elvis Presley record, "Heartbreak Hotel", after which he asked his parents for a guitar. McGuinn enrolled in the famous "Old Town School of Folk Music" in 1957 to further his musical education. After graduating he actively became involved in the folk circuit, and toured and performed with established acts like the Limeliters, Bobby Darin and the Chad Mitchell Trio.
McGuinn eventually moved to Los Angeles, where he started working as a studio musician in Bobby Darin’s studio. At the same time he was watching to Beatle mania sweep across the US and wondered how his brand of folk music could be incorporated into that. McGuinn started performing traditional folk songs with rock undertones and caught the attention of Gene Clark, someone who had a similar taste in music. The nucleus of the Byrds was formed when these two met with David Crosby and found that they had similar folk inclinations and the same idea of giving folk tunes a rock ‘n roll flavor.
The Byrds were signed by Columbia Records in January 1965 and they produced their first number one single, "Mr. Tambourine Man." The song became a major hit and gave the band the perfect start to their careers. The band became one of the most influential acts of the 60’s and though their success was short lived they left quite an impact on the music industry. The band disbanded in 1973 and McGuinn began working on his solo career.
He released his eponymous debut album in 1973 which was a commercial success. It gave him the confidence to fully pursue a solo career. In the following years he released four more albums including "Peace on You" in 1974," Roger McGuinn & Band" in 1975," Cardiff Rose" in 1976 and "Thunderbyrd" in 1977.
After these releases, McGuinn decided to go back to his roots and started performing folk music again. Touring extensively, he established quite a following amongst folk music lovers and became associated with the music. However, he released another rock album in 1991, titled "Back from Rio", in which he collaborated with many famous musicians including his former band members. McGuinn toured extensively to promote his comeback solo album and it was a major success, spawning the hit single "King of the Hill".
McGuinn is also famous for his innovative guitar playing and is credited with introducing two new guitar techniques. Firstly, the "jingle-jangle", which was based on generating ringing harmonics by playing the guitar in the banjo finger picking style. This he learnt at his music school The second technique was based on the incorporation of saxophonist John Coltrane’s jazz atonalities into the Byrds song "Eight Miles High". He was able to achieve both these things by adding a compressor to get longer sustains on the guitar notes, which allowed him to add the "jingle Jangle" which would otherwise have not been produced.
McGuinn was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Byrds in 1991. His contribution to folk rock and folk music cannot be ignored as he put both the genres out in public. This music legend is currently touring as a solo artist so do not miss a chance to catch him live and book your Roger McGuinn tickets now to watch him perform.
