Rob Thomas continued to perform both as the band’s front man and as a solo songwriter/performer and continues it to date. Interestingly, when he deviated from his regular routine of writing and making music, Rob Thomas found even greater success. His solo song writing and singing capacity was explored by him to the most; especially when he collaborated with rock great Carlos Santana in 1999. This outing certified his stature as a music mega star.
Rob Thomas associated with music as early as his childhood. Transitioning into adolescence was easier for him as he resorted to learning and playing music. He resonated his vocals in demos. They backed his effort to try his luck around the Southern US. Over there he indulged in singing obscure rock and roll outfits. He moved to Orlando, Florida in 1993 and formed the band Tabitha's Secret. The group was somewhat successful before Thomas, bassist Brian Yale, and drummer Paul Doucette left to form Matchbox Twenty. Later inductions into the band completed the line-up and the band was all set for a launch.
Rob Thomas became a celebrity with his band back in 1996 with the release of the single Push. Together the band kept up the momentum and released many singles in succession. One after the other, the singles began scoring hits in various radio formats. Their debut LP, Yourself or Someone Like You went platinum dozen times over in America. By this time their band had become a modern rock superstar. Their touring extensively ensured that Thomas was well known in musical circles.
A decade dawned, with the success of albums Mad Season (2000) and More Than You Think You Are (2002). Both cemented Matchbox Twenty's reputation as a first rate rock band. However, many years of non-stop touring took its toll as the band decided to take a break and pursued solo interests. Thomas used this period to produce his first solo album, Lonely No More. The album was a sharp departure from Thomas’s past rock oriented musical style. The critics rated the 2005 album as sleek and funky and could be considered a dance-pop record. Later he found recluse in roots of old school hard rock traditions as well as rawness of the Seattle based Grunge movement form the early nineties.
Rob Thomas’s solo singling though was melodic and smooth. He made a sharp departure from the screaming angry vocals associated with the harder shades of rock and grunge. He showed his range and diversity when he collaborated with Latin guitar great Carlos Santana on the album Supernatural. Thomas musical is often categorized as Alternative rock and Post-grunge. However, most critics associate his style and content with the more mainstream Pop Rock.
Rob Thomas himself won numerous songwriting awards. As the scribe of the lyrics of the Matchbox mega hits like Real World, If You're Gone, Bent and Mad Season. Additionally he was able to carryover his success into a career as a solo artist. Although Thomas scored many hits with his band including a multiplatinum album, his best moment came as an individual contributor when he co-wrote for Supernatural. Smooth was a massive hit in 1999, and it made Thomas a super star. Unsurprisingly, Thomas was even included in the People's Most Beautiful People list that year.
Thomas’s band was nominated multiple times for Grammys, People’s Choice Awards, MTV video music awards and the American Music Awards. They won the APRA awards in 2009 and the People Choice Award, as the Favorite musical group in 2005. Rob Thomas conducted numerous tours with Matchbox Twenty. The most remarkable tour of all time remains the 2008 tour with Alanis Morissette. His solo touring has also manifested his brilliance in front of live audiences.
