How Lowe Found Stardom
Rob Lowe was born in Charlottesville, Virginia as Robert Hepler Lowe. He was studying at Santa Monica High School where he met Sean Penn and Charlie Sheen. Both of them went on to become tremendously successful actors. Like them, Lowe also began to fall in love with acting and eventually entered the entertainment industry when he was offered a role in the television series, ‘Thursday’s Child.’ His performance in that show wowed the world and he earned his first Golden Globe Award nomination for the ‘Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries or Television Film.’ The same year, he appeared in his debut film with Emilio Estevez, ‘The Outsiders’ as Sodapop Curtis.
Lowe and Estevez starred together in another film, ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ which came out in 1985. It helped the duo become more prominent members of the group, Brat Pack. A couple of years later, he earned his second nomination for the Golden Globe Award in the category of, ‘Best Supporting Actor’ for his work in the film, ‘Square Dance.’
The West Wing Days
More success came Rob Lowe’s way during the late ‘90s when he was casted in the hit television series, ‘The West Wing’ as Sam Seaborn. He agreed to star in the show because of his love for politics and also because of his longstanding relationship with the legendary actor, Martin Sheen who appeared in the series as President Bartlet. His work in the show was praised all over the world and earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for, ‘Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.’
When, ‘The West Wing’ started, Sam Seaborn was the lead character but due to other talented actors on the show, that changed. After some time, Lowe found himself at odds with the creator of the series, Aaron Sorkin which led to his departure from the program.
Working His Way To The Top Again
After quitting, ‘The West Wing,’ Rob Lowe began to struggle. In 2003, he became the executive producer and star of the NBC show, ‘The Lyon’s Den’ but it failed. A year later, he got a role on the series, ‘Dr. Vegas’ but it got cancelled. During this tough time, Lowe didn’t give up hope and eventually found success in the TV miniseries genre. He appeared in some very popular T.V. films like, ‘Perfect Strangers,’ ‘The Christmas Blessings,’ ‘Salem’s Lot’ and ‘Beach Girls.’
In 2006, he was casted in the ABC drama series, ‘Brothers & Sisters’ for a guest run in multiple episodes. His initial appearance on the show brought the best ratings since its premier. This persuaded ABC to make an announcement that he will be staying as a special guest star on the show for the rest of season 1. However, Lowe remained a part of the series till Season 4.
Still Going Strong
Rob Lowe continued to enjoy great popularity going into the 2010s. He appeared in the biography of the brat pack, ‘Brat Pack: Where Are They Now?’ and was also invited as a guest on, ‘The Tonight Show with Conan O’ Brien.’ Moreover, he kept on working in many Hollywood flicks including, ‘Behind the Candelabra,’ ‘The Interview,’ ‘Pocket Listing’ and ‘Monster Trucks.’ Lowe also featured on multiple T.V. series like, ‘Californication,’ ‘Moonbeam City,’ ‘The Grinder’ and ‘The Lion Guard.’ He is currently working in an American medical drama television series, ‘Code Black.’
