Rich Brian was born as Brian Imanuel on September 3, 1999 in the capital of Indonesia – Jakarta. His father, a lawyer by profession also ran a family restaurant. There were no financial worries but the family chose to live in a locality that was not considered very decent. The parents hence tried to keep Rich very protected as a result of which he spent a lot of time in front of the television or computer.
He did not get formal education and was mostly homeschooled. In his free time he helped manage the restaurant. Since he was at home most of the time, he had plenty of time to explore in general. He grew fond of music and surfing the internet. He became addicted to Twitter and YouTube and was only eleven years old when he decided to become famous by starting his own YouTube channel. He posted dark-comedy sketches and gradually earned a loyal fan base.
At fifteen years of age, Brian moved from YouTube to Vine and earned the same level of popularity there. Being an Indonesian, English was not his first language nor did he learn it during the time he was homeschooled. However he learned it by listening to American music and watching YouTube videos.
One of Brian’s online American friends introduced him to hip hop music. At that point in time, Brian aspired to work in Hollywood and wanted to do a course in Cinematography. But when he listened to the music by Drake, Kanye West and Logic, his focus switched. He wrote his first rap song in the year 2014 and recorded it on his iPhone.
In July of 2015, the musician adopted Rich Chigga as his screen name and began uploading videos of rap songs on the internet. His debut track on YouTube was Living the Dream. Produced by DJ Smokey, the song grabbed quite a lot of attention. He was among the very few Indonesian rappers who could write raps in English effortlessly. After sometime, it was hard to distinguish Brian from American rappers.
The biggest breakthrough of his career came in February of 2016. This was when he uploaded the single Dat $tick on YouTube. Initially it wasn’t very popular but it picked up pace slowly and eventually became a hit in the US where a few rappers and YouTubers made reaction videos for the song which further increased its popularity. Since its release, the video has been viewed over 90 million times. The single was ranked among the top hits on a number of American rap charts and received Gold certification from the RIAA.
Brian’s next single Who That Be came out in August of 2016. Like its predecessor, it was a hit in both Indonesia and America. After a few months, the musician treated the fans to the remix version of Dat $tick followed by his third single Seventeen. This song got over a million views on YouTube in just a few days.
By mid 2017, Rich Brian was a well-known celebrity in the US. He got offers from numerous American record companies. He further shot to stardom when he embarked on a tour of the US. In May, he released the single Gospel, featuring American rappers Keith Ape and XXXTentacion. In five months’ time the song got over 21 million views. The same month, Brian received the Indonesian Choice Award for the "Breakthrough Artist of the Year."
In August, 2017, the single Glow Like Dat was released on ‘88Rising’s channel. The same month Brian hit the road for a US tour. Towards the end of the year, he released the singles Crisis and Chaos; the former was a collaborative effort with rapper 21 Savage.
