Growing up in a musical family

Rex Orange County's real name is Alex O’Connor and he was born in 1998. He grew up in a family of musicians as his father was a famous pianist while his mother sang in choir. Naturally, County began to take interest in music and developed a fascination with drums. He soon started to learn that instrument and also began work on his vocal skills by taking singing lessons.

When Rex Orange County celebrated his fifteenth birthday, his teachers began to persuade him to apply to the BRIT School, a London institution where stars like, King Krule and Adele have studied. He did just that and was soon accepted as a drummer. Enrollment in that institution turned out to be a big moment in his life as it not only helped County expand his music range, but also helped him discover his full potential as an artist.

Working on his debut album

During the mid 2010s, Rex Orange County started to translate his emotions into songs and penned down ten tracks. He later recorded and compiled them into an album titled, ‘Bcos U Will Never Be Free.’ This record was self-released by him on November 7, 2016. He also uploaded the album in its entirety on SoundCloud where it began to pick up traction and as a result of that, he developed a significant fan following. Although, all the songs included on the record generated buzz, there were some that really stood out like, Corduroy Dreams, Portrait of Ned, A Song About Being Sad and Japan.  

‘Bcos U Will Never Be Free’ also caught the attention of Tyler the Creator who asked him to feature on two songs, Foreword and Boredom both of which made it to his number-one studio album, ‘Flower Boy.’

Apricot Princess and tour

On April 26, 2017, Rex Orange County came out with his second independent record, ‘Apricot Princess.’ The album was loaded with ten songs out of which, he released one single, Untitled which has received over seven hundred thousand hits on YouTube.

County is now all set to hit the road. He will begin the tour in July by performing a show at The Opera House in Toronto.
