Rapheal Saadiq started out as the lead singer of the soul and R&B group Tony! Toni! Toné! Back in the day he went by his birth name Charles Ray Wiggins but later on in the mid 1990s, he adopted the name Rapheal Saadiq.
The singer began his solo career following the Tony! Toni! Toné! album House of Music which came out in 1996. His debut solo studio album titled Vintage was released in the year 2002. It earned him five nominations at the Grammys. Although it received a positive response from the critics, it did not fare too well commercially. This is why Saadiq decided to end his contract with the Universal Records.
His third studio album The Way I See It hit the stores in September of 2008. It featured collaborations with renowned music acts like Joss Stone and Stevie Wonder. The collection has an old school soul sound which he says is a nod to the music by The Four Tops, The Stylictics and The Delfonics.
Several renowned music artists have approached Saadiq to produce their work. Some of his most notable contributions have been with American singer, multi-instrumentalist and record producer D’Angelo. Their collaboration Untitled won D’Angelo a Grammy win in the category of ‘Best R&B Album.’ Other artists that Saadiq has collaborated with over the years include Snoop Dogg, The Roots, Young Bellz and Macy Gray.
Raphael Saadiq’s latest album Jimmy Lee arrived in stores in August of 2019. It is his first release in eight years. With this he has tried to confront many of the reeling thoughts he has been dealing with since the death of his dear brother. It also touches upon some other unresolved childhood traumas and the system of mass incarceration in the US. According to the musician, it is by far the most honest music material he has produced. He says it’s a collection for anyone that has lost a loved one in their life. The record’s artwork includes his mother, sister and late brothers.
Jimmy Lee includes appearances by guest artists including Kendrick Duckworth, Reverend E. Baker, Rob Bacon and Brook D'Leau, among others.
Raphael Saadiq will be taking this very personal album of his to the road in 2020. The North American trek will have the singer and songwriter make stops in notable cities such as Los Angeles and San Diego among others. Thundercat has been roped in as the special guest on select dates.
