How It All Began
After discovering the R&B quintet, New Edition in the early 1908s, Maurice Starr decided to create a white counterpart act with his business partner, Mary Alford. For this purpose, he began conducting auditions and soon met a young Donnie Wahlberg who quickly impressed Starr with his singing and dancing skills. Wahlberg then helped with recruiting other members including, Danny Wood, Jordan Knight, Jonathan Knight and his brother, Mark.
As the line-up of the band was almost confirmed, Mark Wahlberg left the group and was replaced by Jamie Kelly. He was later replaced by Joey McIntyre. After the line-up was finalized, Starr named the band, Nynuk and began training the boys diligently. He then helped them secure a recording deal with Columbia Records who asked him to change the name of the band. After some time, the group’s name was altered to New Kids on the Block.
Making Their Debut
New Kids on the Block soon began to work closely with Maurice Starr as he produced their debut studio album and on, April 1, 1986, the band’s self-titled album hit the markets. The record turned out to be a huge hit, exposing this group to international stardom and going triple platinum in the United States and Canada. It was also certified gold in the United Kingdom. Although the record enjoyed great commercial success, it was unable to perform on the charts and peaked at the twenty fifth spot on the Billboard 200.
However, NKOTB didn’t let this stop them and released their sophomore studio effort, ‘Hangin’ Tough’ a couple of years later. It turned out to be their most important record to date, as it not only topped the Billboard 200 but also went on to sell in excess of eight million copies in the U.S. alone. This album produced five singles all of which became top ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Out of those singles, You Got It (The Right Stuff), I’ll Be Loving You Forever and Cover Girl were awarded gold certification by the RIAA.
Setting The World On Fire
New Kids on the Block continued to roll and released their last and third album of the decade, ‘Merry, Merry Christmas’ on September 19, 1989. This was their first holiday album which composed of both cover songs and original tracks. It landed at the ninth spot on the Billboard 200 and recorded double platinum sales in the United States and Canada which brought them more fame in North America.
Without taking any time off, they put out their next studio project the following year entitled, ‘Step by Step.’ Released in 1990, this studio effort marked their second album to reach top spot on the Billboard 200. It also turned out to be their fourth consecutive multi-platinum record, selling over three million units in the U.S. It also received 3/5 stars from AllMusic.
New Kids on the Block Mixtape Tour
After the release of, ‘Step by Step,’ New Kids on the Block didn’t taste the same level of success. They came out with three more studio efforts including their latest to date, ‘10’ which hit the shelves in 2013. It charted at the sixth spot on the Billboard 200 and collected lukewarm response from the critics.
The band is now returning on the road. They won’t be touring alone though as they will be joined by Salt-N-Pepa, Naughty by Nature, Debbie Gibson and Tiffany. NKOTB Mixtape Tour dates have been shared with the public. The group is scheduled to start the trek with a show at the US Bank Arena in Cincinnati on May 2, 2019.
