About Nipsey Hussle
Nipsey Hussle, often written as Nipsey Hu$$le, is the man behind hit songs such as “Hussle & Motivate”, “Last Time That I Checc’d”, “Young Nigga” and “Hussle in the House”. In a short career span, he has already managed to make a fan out of Jay-Z, thanks to his mixtape, Crenshaw. Jay-Z apparently bought 100 copies of this mixtape for $100 each!
The rapper was born as Ermias Asghedom in Los Angeles, California in 1985. He has been an active member of the music industry since 2005 and is signed on to the Atlantic Recording Corporation currently.
The Music Career of Nipsey Hussle
Nipsey Hussle started out with the release of a series of mixtapes, with the first one being Slauson Boy Volume 1. In between the release of his mixtapes, he released his debut single “Hussle in the House” and also worked with Drake on the song “Killer”. As he started to establish himself in the music business, he got to work with other artists as well, such as Snoop Dogg and Problem.
Crenshaw and Victory Lap
After switching labels, and creating his own label, Nipsey Hussle got the chance to work with many notable artists, including Young Money, Tyga, YG, Yukmouth, FAB and many others. In 2013, he began releasing music from his eight mixtape, Crenshaw. The mixtape was eventually released in October 2013 and contained guest appearances from artists such as Slim Thug, Sade and Skeme.
With the release of Crenshaw, Nipsey Hussle announced that his next work would be a complete studio album, rather than a mixtape. The album, titled Victory Lap was initially slated for release in 2014. The album was said to feature productions from The Futuristiks, 1500 or Nothin’ and DJ Mustard.
The album was eventually released at a much later date, in February 2018 and is already making waves in the music industry. It was released through All Money In No Money Out and Atlantic Records label and was the first major release by the hip hop star after a long series of mixtapes over thirteen years.
Victory Lap Successes
The debut album by Nipsey Hussle turned out to be a big success. It debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 and sold an impressive 53,000 albums. It was also very positively received by critics with The Guardian’s Ian McQuaid noting that the rapper "effortlessly claims his place as crown prince of G-funk’s new school". He continued to praise the artist, saying that “his brags rasp as hoarse and righteous as a man in the middle of a three-day bender, riding beats built from oozing bass swagger and slinking Compton synths, as brash and gleeful as peak-era NWA. It’s visceral west coast rap at its unapologetic finest, as Hussle refreshes cliches of unstoppable prowess with the conviction of a true believer.”
Other media outlets also praised the fresh new sound of Victory Lap, with Pitchfork calling it “the most gripping record in (the rapper’s) catalog”.
And now, lucky for the fans of the rising star, Nipsey Hussle is all geared up for his Victory Lap tour, this June. You would not want to miss out on this opportunity.
