Arriving On The Scene As The New Style
Naughty by Nature was formed as The New Style by three East Orange natives, Treach, Vin Rock and DJ Kay Gee in 1986. For almost three years, they worked on their music, trying to develop their signature sound and were eventually signed by MCA Records. The band didn’t waste any time and began to work on its debut studio effort. While writing material for the record, they met the producers Unique and Swing who helped them produce their album and on December 5, 1989, ‘Independent Leaders’ hit the markets. The record was composed of ten tracks including, Scuffin' Those Knees which became a minor hit.
Making The Right Noise
Following the release of, ‘Independent Leaders,’ the Grammy winning rapper and actress, Queen Latifah became the mentor of The New Style. They decided to change things up a little and altered their name to Naughty by Nature. They then signed a record deal with Tommy Boy and released their second eponymous album in 1991. This studio effort marked their first record to sell more than a million copies in the United States. It also received 4.5/5 stars from AllMusic.
‘Naughty by Nature’ was preceded by the group’s breakthrough single, O.P.P which sampled Jackson 5’s chart-topping single, ABC. The track turned out to be a monstrous hit, debuting atop the Hot Rap Songs chart and earning double platinum certification from the RIAA. In addition, it also made the Rolling Stone’s list of the, ‘100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs of All Time’ and earned them their first Grammy nomination for the ‘Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.’ Apart from this single, the album also featured the song, Pin the Tail on the Donkey which appeared on the soundtrack of the video game, ‘Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2.’
A year later, Naughty by Nature collected their first American Music Award for the ‘Favorite New Artist – Rap/Hip-Hop’ following which their third studio record, ’19 Naughty III’ hit the markets. The record became their second platinum selling effort and peaked at the first spot on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It received critical acclaim too with AllMusic, Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly all praising the record. The album contained four collaborative tracks with, Heavy D, Rottin Razkals, Freddie Foxxx and Queen Latifah.
1995 was the year of Naughty by Nature. They hit the peak of their popularity by churning out their second consecutive chart-topping studio album, ‘Poverty’s Paradise.’ The album sold over five hundred thousand units, going gold in the United States and winning them their first Grammy for, ‘Best Rap Album.’ It also met favorable response from the critics. It consisted of three singles out of which, Feel Me Flow landed at the third spot on the Hot Rap Songs chart.
The band didn’t slow down and kept the momentum going with their next two albums, ‘Nineteen Naughty Nine: Nature’s Fury’ and ‘IIcons.’ The former achieved gold status in the States while the latter climbed to the fifteenth spot on the Billboard 200. It was also their last studio effort before the trio parted ways.
The members of the group decided to reunite just because of their love for rap music in 2006. In 2011, the band came out with its seventh studio record, ‘Anthem Inc.’ It was packed with hits and also included collaborative tracks with Queen Latifah and Syleena Johnson which made this record special.
