MST3K: Brainchild of Joel Hodgson
Mystery Science Theater 3000 is an insanely popular show which is created by actor, comedian and writer, Joel Hodgson. Before coming up with the idea of this series, Hodgson was struggling to make a career as a comedian and moved to Los Angeles where he began to gain some recognition for his work. He was soon invited as a guest on television shows, ‘Saturday Night Live’ and ‘Late Night with David Letterman’ which exposed him to more fame. As his popularity was soaring, Hodgson decided to return to Minneapolis where he began thinking of new comedy ideas and before long, he had come up with the idea of Magic Science Theater 3000.
Joel Hodgson then started to work on the concept of this show. After taking inspiration from the illustration of the Elton John song, ‘I’ve Seen That Movie Too,’ he decided that the show’s concept will be based on hilarious commentary on movies because this would also allow him to showcase his own comedic skills. He also credits a 1972 flick, "Silent Running" as the biggest influence behind the creation of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Once Hodgson finished writing the concept of the show, he contacted Josh Weinstein and Best Brains and together, the trio penned down the lyrics of the series’ theme song, Love Theme from Mystery Science Theater 3000. The music for this track was provided by Charlie Erickson.
The Premiere
During the mid ‘80s, Joel Hodgson shared his idea of the show with the production manager of KTMA, Jim Mallon who agreed to assist him in producing the pilot episode of the series. Excited by Mallon’s positive response, he recruited Trace Beaulieu and J. Elvis Weinstein to develop the episode. In September of 1988, they finished filming the 30-minute pilot show and included some segments from the movie, "The Green Slime." Mallon then soon met the station manager of KTMA, Donald O’Conner and convinced him to sign the show for thirteen episodes.
On November 24, 1988, Mystery Science Theater 3000 debut its first episode, ‘Invaders from the Deep’ which was followed by the second episode, ‘Revenge of the Mysterious from Mars.’ The show instantly became such a huge success that the initial run of 13 episodes was extended to 21.
Despite the show’s growing fan base and popularity, KTMA’s overall fortunes declined leading it to file for bankruptcy. This allowed HBO to buy MST3K for their Comedy Channel cable network which was later renamed Comedy Central. The show ran successfully and a film, ‘Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie’ was also produced by the network. It was released in 1996 to positive acclaim from both fans and critics. After the Comedy Central era ended, the show began airing on Sci-Fi Channel where it ran from 1997 to 1999.
The Revival
In 2010, Joel Hodgson thought about reviving his hit show, Mystery Science Theater 3000 and purchased the rights of the series from Best Brains and Jim Mallon. He then decided to recruit a brand new cast for the revival of the show. He hired, Jonah Ray as Jonah Heston, Felicia Day as Kinga Forrester, Hampton Yount as Crow Servo and Baron Vaughn as Tom Servo. Hodgson began the production of the show on January 4, 2016 and a year later, the entire season of the show was released in its eternity by Netflix. He is now currently working on the next season of the series which is expected to be issued by Netflix on November 22, 2018.
